Omaha voters approve a $155 million bond for a joint police and fire headquarters

$155 millionbond Omaha voters approved Tuesday

The bond will pay for a joint Omaha police and fire headquarters in central Omaha.

Omaha voters overwhelmingly approved a $155 million bond Tuesday night. It clears the way for a joint Omaha Police Department and Omaha Fire Department headquarters in central Omaha.

The building would go up at the development near 72nd and Dodge. Before the vote, KMTV 3 News Now toured the current police headquarters near 15th and Howard with Mike Oestmann of the mayor's office. He showed asbestos on the ceiling. Police union President Patrick Dempsey said he's worked there five years and hasn't worried about his safety.

The joint headquarters would move to Crossroads

  • Asbestos: frequent testing shows it isn't spreading, Oestmann said
  • Downtown garage-and-offices option: cost more, mainly because of parking
  • Moving out: both departments leave their Downtown buildings

The Wrap

Joslyn Castle has an ofrenda up for Día de Muertos, designed and installed by Monica Gomez. It's on view through Nov. 6 at Joslyn Castle & Gardens, so Wednesday and Thursday are two of your last chances to see it. A castle makes a fitting backdrop for a tradition built on remembering. Beautiful setting.
