Omaha voters approved a $155 million bond Tuesday for a new joint police and fire headquarters. Here's what comes next: the city starts buying land and searching for a contractor this month, and construction is expected to begin in 2028.
The city also plans to add 18 firefighters in the spring, and the union says it wants more. The City Council accepted a federal grant this week to pay for them.

- City adds: another $2.4 million toward the effort
- After the grant: the city picks up the full cost
Union president Trevor Towey says he has requested more firefighters for five years, and call volume keeps climbing. Battalion Chief Kurt Theiler says crews have worked in the current building since 1966, and the central location will speed up service, including for Elkhorn.
