- ➤ Nicky Budlong's mother and stepfather recounted the horrific conditions they endured in their Omaha home when their daughter—who served as their caregiver—was charged with manslaughter. Omaha World-Herald
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At the board meeting on August 25, the OPS Board recognized the OPS Research team for its 2025 Qualtrics XM Breakthrough Artist Award—an honor for its new attendance automation system. Members also debated removing two books for explicit content and approved spending for special education, dual enrollment, and eight vans for school transportation—decisions that set a timeline for evaluating the superintendent. - ➤ Psychology faculty member John W. Tiner, Ph.D. at UNO has developed a new counseling theory—Behavioral Economics Systems Theory—that blends economic decision-making with counseling methods. He presented the theory at the Rocky Mountain Psychology Conference and uses it to enhance his courses in psychology and economics. University of Nebraska Omaha
- ➤ UNO Chancellor Joanne Li shared a message with students, faculty and staff on August 25 urging them to stay curious and ask bold questions as classes began on campus, and she thanked the community for their support—especially noting Durango's hard work over the summer. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At its Aug. 18 meeting, the Omaha Streetcar Authority board approved two change orders—$114,227 for Sampson Construction to modify the maintenance facility and $69,473.11 for Sadler Electric to protect a water line—while Interim Director Rick Gustafson reported that construction will begin in January with design work completed and proposals due by Sept. 10. The project spent about $5M in July and remains on budget, and public comment raised concerns about bond funds and affordable housing. Flatwater Free Press
