COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local initiative in Omaha is helping an Afghan refugee family purchase a new home after they were forced to leave their homeland four years ago following the fall of the Afghan government. The project supports those who served with U.S. agencies and armed forces.  WOWT
  • Local chefs are preparing holiday meals for homeless veterans at the New Visions Omaha Veterans Campus. The event brings community support + culinary expertise to honor veterans during the holiday season.  WOWT
  • Conagra chefs and volunteers are set to serve Christmas meals to local homeless shelters for the 19th year, bringing holiday cheer and support to Omaha residents. The event will continue during the holiday season.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Base Kamp Coffee & Wine Shop will open soon in Regency Shopping Center at 120 Regency Parkway. The kiosk in the center court will serve craft coffee and wine and will start construction after Santa Claus leaves following the holiday season.  Grow Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Omaha's skies are chilly today with partly cloudy conditions and mild winds that will shift tonight as gusts could reach 60 mph & forecasts now predict nearly two inches of snow Saturday followed by subzero wind chills Sunday morning.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Omaha and the streetcar operations team will run extra sweeper trains, use heated pantographs and automatic sanders, and pre-treat trackways with chemical blends today to keep rails clear in winter weather. Plow operations coordinated with the City will help maintain safe boarding at stops along the route.  Grow Omaha
  • Omaha police announced Willow, a bloodhound K-9, will get a custom-fitted bullet & stab-proof vest from a donation by Vested Interest in K9s Inc. sponsored by Rusty & Tammy Goodwin of M & T Trucking, with the vest expected within 10 weeks.  KETV
  • Omaha Public Power District reported 3,288 customers lost power at 5 a.m. Wednesday amid strong winds, and technicians are working to restore service + updates are continuing.  WOWT

  • There is less than a week for Omaha residents using the Affordable Care Act marketplace to choose a health insurance plan for next year; residents are encouraged to review their options & act before the deadline.  WOWT

  • Habitat for Humanity of Omaha celebrated its milestone—the completion of the five-year affordable Bluestem Prairie phase—in North Omaha on Tuesday.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Creighton volleyball arrived in Lexington on Tuesday night for its third Sweet Sixteen run while student-athletes balance finals in Omaha (coach Brian Rosen said the team is focused on a Final Four goal) and they will play Arizona State today.  KETV
  • Charles Schwab Field unveiled five new LED displays on Wednesday, including two new outfield scoreboards and a left-field display with added seating panels; the upgrades will debut for Creighton baseball’s 2026 home opener & support play in the Big Ten tournament and CWS.  KETV
