COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First Alert 6's 'Stuff the Truck' food and toy drive wrapped up Tuesday, Dec. 9 — donations were dropped off at four Methodist sites in Omaha, Fremont, and Council Bluffs, including nonperishable food, new toys, household items, and cash.  WOWT
  • Today, First Alert 6 kicks off the Stuff the Truck food and toy drive from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The drive collects nonperishable food, new unwrapped toys, essential household supplies & cash donations to help local families.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan will perform his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour at the Orpheum Theater on March 21 next year. Presale begins Thursday at 10 a.m. with general admission starting Friday at 10 a.m.  KETV
  • Gary Sadlemyer, a long-time radio host at KFAB, will say goodbye this week after a 49-year career and has expressed he feels at peace with his decision, leaving behind a legacy of memorable broadcasts.  Omaha World-Herald
  • On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the Department of World Languages & the Japanese minor program hosted a craft fair at the Milo Bail Student Center atrium where about 30 UNO students learned to make traditional Japanese crafts under the guidance of Kanami Ito, a Fulbright teaching assistant.  The Gateway

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Niche evaluated nearly 180 Omaha-area public elementary schools for its 2026 rankings; four of the top 25 schools received an A+ designation for outstanding performance. Families can use these findings to compare local quality education options.  Omaha World-Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Mead marked major progress in the AltEn cleanup effort last Tuesday after pesticide treated waste was removed from the former seed corn facility. Gov Pillen said six seed companies fully funded the work under state oversight & will continue water quality monitoring for several years.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Pillen will hold a news conference Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the former AltEn ethanol plant in Mead to discuss cleanup progress since the plant closed in 2021 and will be joined by state water, energy, and environment officials.  WOWT
  • The Nebraska Public Service Commission approved Black Hills Energy’s $23.9M request on Tuesday after negotiations reduced the planned increase, and new natural gas rates will take effect January 1 — adding about $2.85 to residential bills each month.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Omaha celebrated Tuesday as the first phase of Bluestem Prairie near 52nd Street and Sorenson Parkway came to completion, providing 85 families new affordable homes. The nonprofit plans to begin building 64 additional homes next year as it transforms a long-vacant site.  Nebraska Examiner
