COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The nonprofit Completely KIDS in Omaha is asking for donations for its annual holiday gift drive for kids in its before and after school programs. The drive supports local children during the holiday season.  WOWT
  • The Salvation Army’s 35th annual Turkey Fest in Omaha delivered 1,459 Thanksgiving meals to seniors as volunteers began cooking on Saturday and packed meals early Thanksgiving morning—marking a 20% increase over last year.   • 7 Can Help is hosting a Salvation Army Red Kettle Telethon to support the Tree of Lights Campaign, which raises funds for families in need in Omaha. The telethon is scheduled for Thursday in December and will run until 6:30 p.m.—donations are accepted by calling 402-522-7777.  KETV
  • Porky Butts BBQ owner Blane Hunter cooked a free Thanksgiving meal for first responders on Thanksgiving, serving up to 125 police, fire & military personnel in Omaha. He said the meal honors his late family members and plans to serve more people next year.  WOWT
  • Oak and Acorn, a downtown toy store, gives families a chance to try sensory toys before buying them. Founders Jaime and Danielle Montes opened the shop after they struggled to find toys that worked for children with special needs — and the store also offers a book section for older kids.  3 News Now
  • Project Intentional—an Omaha nonprofit—hosted its first community Thanksgiving dinner that served over 800 meals and provided hygiene items, socks, and coats for local residents. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Dozens of families were forced to spend Thanksgiving in emergency shelters after an early morning fire destroyed 20 units at La Quinta Apartments in Blair; crews rescued residents, treated several for smoke inhalation, and the Blair Animal Shelter cared for displaced pets as investigators work to determine the cause.  WOWT

  • Omaha is set for a busy holiday season as many light displays and arts events are planned after Thanksgiving — with a Holiday Lights Lighting Ceremony and Lights of Aksarben taking place today and a Winter Wonderland in Papillion on November 29th.
