  • Angie Hanson, who lost her son, husband and brother, founded Butterflies and Halos in 2021 to sell snarky grief cards that combine honesty with humor—her business later expanded to include candles, stickers and a grief coaching service that helps customers cope with loss.  Flatwater Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Taricka Burton, the Executive Director of the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement at UNO, was named Employee of the Month for November — she was praised for her leadership, positive attitude, and commitment to enhancing the student experience, and she received a certificate, a monetary award, two tickets to a UNO sporting event, and a hot/cold tumbler as recognition.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Inside UNO’s Allwine Hall, Dr. Clayton’s lab is researching the gut microbiome of marmoset monkeys from South America—using undergraduates and graduates to capture data on how antibiotics may affect beneficial bacteria. The team’s collaborative projects aim to build a knowledge base that might help explain similar processes in humans.  The Gateway
  • Today, Omaha Public Schools released state data showing that overall proficiency in English, math and science improved from 27%, 20% and 40% in 2021–22 to 39%, 29% and 53% in 2023–24; at Indian Hill Elementary, Principal Abbie Vlcek said teachers are using structured literacy and group reading to boost student learning — a method that reflects the district’s wider Improvement Science approach.  KETV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Right now in Omaha, strong winds mean a wind advisory is in effect until midnight; forecasts say there will be light rain or a mix on Friday and 2 to 4 inches of snow on Saturday—conditions that may delay travel. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Omaha Public Works said the Harney Street bridge will reopen this week with a new look after its demolition for the streetcar project—drivers will see through traffic for the first time in 11 months; westbound Farnam Street at 10th is scheduled to open before Thanksgiving while lane closures remain between Farnam and Harney for about four weeks.  KETV

  • State Medicaid agencies are reexamining payment for ABA autism therapy as rising costs, including a 48% rate cut in Nebraska, raise worries that families may have less access to essential services—federal budget cuts add to the challenge.  Nebraska Examiner

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jack Van Slyke led Bishop Neumann to win the state championship with four touchdowns and 115 yards on 21 carries—he scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure the school's first title since 2003 at Memorial Stadium.  WOWT
  • Omaha Men's Basketball lost 88+77 to James Madison Tuesday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center, with guard Lance Waddles nearly earning a triple-double as the team shot 49.2 percent from the field and five players scored in double figures.   • Omaha youth sports teams have long struggled with limited field space and traveled to other cities for games until a $65 million upgrade at Tranquility Park begins, with work set to close the park until fall 2027 — a delay that may increase travel costs — while local leaders expect the new facility to ease scheduling for families and coaches.  WOWT
