COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, November 20th, volunteers at UNMC packed 20,000 vegetarian hearty taco pasta meals for local food pantries to help families facing rising food insecurity — organizers said the strong turnout required turning away extra volunteers. UNMC hopes to expand the program in the future to assist more families in need.  KETV

  • North Italia celebrated its grand opening on November 19 at 17151 Davenport Street in Village Pointe in Omaha—its first Nebraska location among more than 45 restaurants nationwide, with the first 100 parties receiving a custom North Italia Omaha candle as a welcome gift.  Grow Omaha
  • A new Mexican boba and ice cream shop with flavors like King Nutella and Oreo and bear-shaped ice is coming soon to Omaha. The franchise started in 2020 in Mexico and has since expanded to Canada and the US—official opening details remain unclear.  KETV
  • After 12 years in business, Pizzeria Davlo, a family-owned restaurant known for its Chicago-style deep-dish pizza at 14220 Fort Street, will close permanently on Saturday, December 6th+ the closure will end a long-running local dining spot.  Grow Omaha

  • American Midwest Ballet's Artistic Director Erika Overturff said The Nutcracker will open on November 22nd at the Hoff Center—with a sensory-friendly performance on November 23rd—and run through December 7th at the Orpheum, where an extra show was added due to high demand.  KIOS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The airport expects about 192,000 travelers next week—3.4% more than last year—and plans busy days on November 26th, November 30th, and December 1st as part of its pre-Thanksgiving preparations. Managers advise passengers to arrive two hours early and check terminal details due to the ongoing Build OMA Terminal Modernization Program.  KFAB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On November 10th, the Elkhorn Public Schools Board of Education heard parents and students ask for extra music staff as choir participation grew by 151 percent and a districtwide strings program was proposed. The board then approved staffing changes and reviewed an audit that showed rising per-pupil costs while providing an update on building projects such as a storm shelter.  Flatwater Free Press
  • Critics say a miscalculation in Nebraska’s TEEOSA formula gave Omaha Public Schools an extra $30.5M for 2025-2026, so the Nebraska Department of Education will subtract that amount from next year’s aid — state Sen. Danielle Conrad called the error unprecedented. The 18-member School Financing Review Commission wrapped up its review as Gov. Jim Pillen and lawmakers pushed for a revised funding formula to ease property tax burdens.  KETV
