BUSINESS NEWS

  • 7 Brew Coffee will hold a ribbon cutting on December 15 for its new drive-thru stand at 18236 Evans Street (near 182nd and West Maple Road) as it opens its first Omaha location. The Arkansas-based chain (joining locations in Fremont, Lincoln, Grand Island, Norfolk, Kearney, North Platte and York) will start serving coffee soon.  Grow Omaha

CRIME NEWS

  • OPPD warned Omaha residents about a scam after a customer reported a person impersonating an OPPD worker who offered a new meter and became belligerent when asked for identification — the impersonator left without gaining home access. The utility said advanced infrastructure metering is planned over the next few years and urged customers to verify worker authenticity by calling OPPD directly.  KETV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • OPPD is rethinking its plan to retire two coal-fired power units at its North Omaha station by the end of 2026 as growing electric demand pushes the utility to review its conversion schedule. The utility will assess options to maintain a stable power supply in response to the rising need.  Omaha World-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Springfield Platteview Community Schools performed a song during the district’s annual Veterans Day ceremony on November 11 to honor veterans.  WOWT
  • UNO’s Office of Engagement published its 2024—25 Annual Report on November 11, detailing how over 8,000 students, 266 community partners, and 504 courses worked together to advance teaching, research, and service in Omaha. The report also noted that more than $1.2 million in benefits was generated through shared spaces and research projects, reinforcing UNO’s mission of community engagement.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • UNO students turned an IT project into a research partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory to create a machine learning prototype that detects rust and dents in hazardous waste storage drums—this effort shows promise for improving safety in handling hazardous materials.  University of Nebraska Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Omaha residents can view striking northern lights tonight as clear skies and a chill of 31 degrees create clear conditions for the red and green displays if they find a dark spot to the north — chief meteorologist Bill Ranby noted that while scattered clouds may appear tomorrow, another chance to see the lights could come later. This fall display follows a week of chilly weather and dry conditions that continue to make the night sky ideal for viewing.  KETV

  • Nebraska leaders honored veterans at Memorial Park Tuesday morning by sharing messages that included a thank you from the prime minister of Vietnam. Governor Jim Pillen, Mayor John Ewing Jr., and Congressman Don Bacon stressed that the sacrifices of veterans are recognized both at home and abroad.  KETV
  • Military families at Offutt Air Force Base have struggled during a record-long government shutdown that began 42 days ago, leaving service members without pay and many families relying on the base food pantry for support. Lawmakers in Washington will work to end the shutdown soon, but military families say their financial recovery will take time.  WOWT
  • At Eppley Airfield in Omaha, staffing shortages have led to about 4% of flights being canceled while a federal trial for former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts has been postponed to March and authorities identified an 80-year-old drowning victim from Lake Zorinsky. In state news, Governor Pillen made a historic appointment by naming Judge Derek Vaughn as the first African American justice to the Nebraska Supreme Court and Congressman Feenstra launched his Iowa governor campaign at Dordt University last night — billionaire Warren Buffett also reassured shareholders with a new letter and $1.3 billion in charitable gifts.  KIOS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since 2021, the UNO Clinical Gait Analysis Lab has helped more than 175 Nebraska kids with mobility challenges by using a pressure treadmill and digital mapping of movement—this method gave doctors the data needed to plan targeted nerve surgery for children like Theo Brewer, who now walks better and participates in sports. The lab’s work has provided new treatment options for kids facing mobility issues.  WOWT
