COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents at Southview Heights Assisted Living enjoyed a trunk or treat event this weekend—bringing festivity and Halloween joy to their community.  WOWT
  • Heartland Family Service celebrated its 150th anniversary on Monday and honored over 400 staff members, 115 volunteers, and 600 donors at its 15 locations. Next year the nonprofit will add crisis services 24 hours a day—each person will get a dedicated specialist for support.  KETV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trinity Financial Group purchased the American National Bank building at 7921 Dodge Street for $1.8 million, and the bank will vacate the 4,856 square feet building by the end of this year — renovations are scheduled to finish by July 1, 2026 as the company moves from its office at 13520 California Street.  Grow Omaha

ECONOMY NEWS

  • All $1 million in the Omaha streetcar impact fund has been distributed to Blackstone District property owners—who must pass the funds to tenant businesses affected by construction.  Omaha World-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In 2000, Omaha students paraded in Halloween costumes at Creighton University and Joslyn Elementary, dressing as characters like Dorothy, Pikachu, and Pooh Bear. Staff reported favorable weather—allowing the children to play safely—and the parade offered a memorable celebration for all involved.  KETV
  • Lacey LeGrand, an Academic Advisor II in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Biology at UNO, was named Advisor of the Month by the Academic Advising Council for September—she received a certificate and gift card for her dedication to student success.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • US News and World Report released its 2026 rankings of Nebraska K-8 schools and found that the Elkhorn and Millard districts had the most top-ranking schools—showing their strong academic performance.  Omaha World-Herald
  • On Oct. 13, the Elkhorn Board of Education held a meeting where band booster president Cassandra DeStefano asked for an assistant band director to help the 108-member band program—she said one director cannot meet the needs like smaller programs do. Two Elkhorn High seniors also discussed boosting FCCLA opportunities while the district celebrated Hillrise Elementary being named a Blue Ribbon School, 20 National Merit Semifinalists, a U.S. Presidential Scholar, and teacher John Bacus receiving a NAS award.  Flatwater Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Omaha is offering free yard waste collection until Dec. 5, allowing residents to leave brown paper bags on regular garbage days or drop off waste at the new Oma-Gro Composting Facility at 60th and Harrison. Reminders include no plastic bags, bags over 40 pounds, tree stumps or branches wider than 2 inches — and special options are available for seniors and those with disabilities.  KETV
  • Residents in Little Bohemia have voiced worries about parking as plans for about 160 new apartments, which could lead to a shortage of more than 260 spots, continue to move forward; some even use cones to reserve street parking. The Little Bohemia Business Improvement District requested a city study on parking ahead of a council hearing set for Tuesday, November 4 — the group wants to ensure that the development’s tax increment financing steps address this issue.  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska Medicine’s NICU babies will have handmade Storytime costumes for Halloween as nurses teamed with the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program to create outfits inspired by beloved storybooks — the hospital posted the costumes on Facebook Monday morning and invited viewers to vote for their favorite outfit.  WOWT
  • Epic Research and UNMC found that Nebraska has the highest rate of Parkinson’s disease at 620 per 100,000 people—links to agricultural pesticides may explain the numbers—and they are working with local farmers on new treatment methods.  3 News Now
  • UNO received a $6 million NIH award to continue research at the Center for Research in Human Movement Variability — led by Dr. Nikolaos 'Nick' Stergiou. The funding supports studies to develop therapies for movement disorders — work that began in August and will continue until July 2030.  University of Nebraska Omaha
