COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Child Saving Institute and Children’s Square merged to form a new organization aimed at strengthening services for children and families in Omaha and Council Bluffs—CEO Jaymes Sime explained the merger during a KIOS-FM interview on October 24th.  KIOS
  • On Friday, a crash on Dodge Street and a shooting in North Omaha led to two people being hospitalized + a hearing on an ICE facility lawsuit and the final day to register for a special recall election took place. In addition, a groundbreaking for the new Omaha North HS stadium and YMCA upgrade occurred on Friday + Husker football is set to play Northwestern today at 11 a.m.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Visitors to an Omaha haunt inspired by Disney’s Haunted Mansion can explore a cemetery with talking busts and a talking crystal ball—this attraction runs only Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in October near 168th Street and Giles Road.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Omaha Public Schools' Head Start program may not receive its funding on time if the federal government shutdown continues—one of 134 programs across the country facing potential delays in funding. The decision will depend on when lawmakers resolve the shutdown.  Omaha World-Herald
  • The University of Nebraska at Omaha released its first Skills Report on October 24 that lists the top 10 skills local employers want and shows how students can earn digital badges to share their abilities. The report uses data and teacher input to shape courses—helping guide students and employers in the local workforce.  University of Nebraska Omaha

  • Officials broke ground on the new Omaha North HS stadium and YMCA on Oct. 24 after the project was announced in April.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pink Lotus Project is hosting its annual pancake feed and health fair today from 9 a.m. to noon at Pilgrim Baptist Church on 2501 Hamilton St, offering free screenings for cancer, diabetes and blood pressure—attendees can enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes with two sausages and a drink for $15.  KETV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Nebraska Cornhuskers will host Northwestern today at Nebraska Memorial Stadium—kickoff is at 11 a.m. CT and the game airs on FS1. The game adds to a busy weekend for local football fans.  KFAB
  • Elkhorn North football team honored head coach Sam Stanley’s late 11-month-old son, Grant, with banners, a Purple Out, and a balloon release—an emotional tribute that came as the team earned a win.  WOWT
