COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local non-profits are advancing community support as CenterPointe hosts a Winter Essentials Donation Drive at the Campus for Hope, accepting new or gently used coats, gloves, hats, hoodies, scarves, blankets, socks, sleeping bags and kids toys through November 14 on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Metropolitan Community College received a $50,000 grant for its technology programs while Millard Public Schools Foundation is raising funds for an eSports room, the Visiting Nurse Association launched Family Connects to help newborn families, Omaha Municipal Land Bank reported transforming 1,562 properties with an $83.5 million economic impact, and Threshold CoC held Project Connect at Baxter Arena offering free health screenings and assistance.  Grow Omaha

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Heavy smoke poured from a building north of downtown Omaha late Wednesday night—firefighters responded around 11 p.m. and put out the blaze while evidence of squatters was found, no injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.  KETV

  • KMR Fusion & Sushi Bar is coming soon to 906 North 16th Street, Suite B, just west of Tip Top Apartments & next to Elie's Chinchorro, and an opening date has not been announced.  Grow Omaha
  • Union Pacific reported 7% profit growth and earnings of 1.79 billion dollars in the third quarter as its CEO pushed for an 85 billion dollar merger with Norfolk Southern—planned to link its Western and Eastern networks. The deal is under review by the Surface Transportation Board and has drawn mixed reactions from railroads and shippers.  Omaha World-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OLLAS announced that it will give scholarships to 38 UNO students for the 2025 to 2026 school year with help from the Mammel Foundation—this is the largest group ever selected. The awards support local students with financial need and help build leadership skills through community work.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Bridget Hall, a first-generation student who earned both her bachelor's and MBA at UNO, now leads real-time payments in North and South America at ACI Worldwide—she credits UNO's hands-on classes and expert professors for preparing her to drive digital payment change and guide future leaders on its advisory board. This vision of digital progress and community support shows how local education can unlock big opportunities.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • On October 23rd, UNO secured $40.7 million in external research funding for FY 2024-2025 from 92 sponsors including 21 federal agencies + 12 state agencies through 210 awarded proposals; 118 principal investigators received grants. The office also granted over 205 student awards, and university officials praised the funding for advancing research and benefiting Omaha.  University of Nebraska Omaha

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Kimberly Helseth of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center said that doctors recommend annual mammograms for women 40 and older — the tests detect up to 90% of cancers — and she explained that new treatments such as robotic nipple sparing mastectomies offer a less invasive approach to breast cancer surgery. The surgeon emphasized the importance of screenings and noted that women with denser breast tissue may need additional evaluation.  KETV
  • Doctors at Nebraska Medicine say there is a shortage of Black dermatologists — a gap that may delay proper diagnosis for Black patients. At the Skin of Color/Ethnic Skin Clinic, Dr. Erin Barrett and Dr. Kayla Clark report that nearly 90% of patients are Black and many diagnoses are revised after treatment.  KETV
  • Wings of Hope held an event Thursday in Omaha where a dance by Kogan Larsen from American Midwest Ballet aimed to offer hope to breast cancer patients and survivors — uniting community support and strength.  KETV

  • Today, Omaha Hockey will face No. 13 UMass at 7 p.m. at Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena for homecoming weekend—Omaha holds a 6-2-1 series lead over UMass. After the weekend games, the Mavericks will begin conference play with a road series at Colorado College starting Oct. 31.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Elkhorn North football played Thursday with heavy hearts as head coach Sam Stanley’s infant son, Grant, died just before his first birthday. The Wolves rallied from a halftime deficit and clinched their first win over Bennington with a game-winning touchdown by senior Ethan Beachy on a fourth-and-goal play + banners and a balloon release honored Grant’s memory.  WOWT
