BUSINESS NEWS

  • Omaha small businesses are raising prices as costs for ingredients like flour, eggs, cocoa powder and coffee have gone up significantly, forcing owners from Dave's Cakes to Sgt. Peffer's to change rates to keep their doors open. Business owners expect higher prices to continue through winter and may ease by spring — customers should budget accordingly.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • After reopening with a new 42000 square foot expansion in 2024, the Joslyn Art Museum broke visitor records with 159,420 guests counted by the end of September—its numbers are expected to surpass 200000 by year end while earning national acclaim and international design awards. Director Jack Becker said the museum has become a favored venue for school tours and community art programs that showcase modern exhibits alongside its historic architecture.  Flatwater Free Press
  • Opera Omaha will stage the comedic opera 'The Barber of Seville' featuring guest singer Alexander Birch Elliott as Figaro at the Orpheum Theater on October 24th and 26th.   • UNO graduate student Sarah Schappert is researching ways to secure public events at NCITE and prevent terrorist attacks by analyzing past security threats. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo announced its first orangutan pregnancy in more than a decade. The 26-year-old Ruby is expecting an infant in February and her pregnancy was confirmed with hormone tests—marking a key moment for a critically endangered species.  KETV

  • State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh and nonprofit leader Katie Daly discussed ways to lift Nebraska residents out of poverty in a recent episode of Consider This.   • The Omaha Airport Authority announced that Eppley Field’s modernization program will include an Escape Lounge—its first airport lounge placed after security in the new concourse. The lounge will open with the new terminal in 2027 and all passengers will be able to buy access passes regardless of airline or ticket class.  KFAB

HEALTH NEWS

  • The DEA is partnering with local health organizations and law enforcement agencies for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday so Omaha residents can safely drop off expired and unused prescription medications at designated sites.  KFAB

  • Rose Shires, a longtime coach with 510 wins who led the Mavericks to a national title and helped transition the team to Division I, is being inducted into the Omaha Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday—she joins four others honored for their contributions to local sports.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • George Thompson, a local fishing guide, caught a record-breaking 5-foot, 105-pound blue catfish on October 12 on the Missouri River north of Council Bluffs after it took 35 minutes to reel it in. The Iowa DNR estimated the fish (20-25 years old) before Thompson returned it to the river.  KFAB
