COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Visiting Nurse Association will offer drive-thru immunization clinics at its headquarters this October with proceeds funding its Community Care services; over 2,200 participants joined the Susan G. Komen walk at Werner Park last Saturday to raise more than $450,000 for cancer research, treatment and education. Open Door Mission CEO Candace Gregory began a 24-hour livestream podcast outside Lydia House last Thursday—while the Omaha Community Foundation recently awarded $147,319 to 11 local organizations from three grant funds.  Grow Omaha
  • Maverick Store is holding a Reverse Trick-or-Treat Food Drive where students can donate non-perishable food, pasta, toiletries or feminine products to support Maverick Food Pantry and receive a 10% off coupon for one general merchandise item. Donors drop items in a gray bin and notify staff, and the coupons—usable on one item per purchase and valid until Oct 31—cannot be used on department orders, books, regalia or computer hardware and software.  The Gateway

  • The October 16 Weekly Market Report showed that Piezon’s Pizzeria remained open after owner Matt Vrzal’s unexpected death and that Little King deli now serves breakfast with a discount available until November 10, while North Italia is hiring for its new restaurant opening November 19. Other updates detail that Cedar cocktail bar will celebrate its 10-year anniversary on October 18 and several retail and commercial real estate projects are progressing across Omaha—marking a busy period for local businesses.  Grow Omaha

CULTURE NEWS

  • Omaha’s 2025–2026 Broadway series began in September at the Orpheum with The Outsiders—a stage adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel featuring local talent such as Omaha native Mekhi Payne. The series will continue with updated shows including The Wiz running November 18–23 while the Omaha Holiday Boutique takes place at the CHI Health Center Convention Center November 14–16.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jody Neathery-Castro, a UNO political science professor, was named a NU DEAL fellow in a two-year leadership program designed to build future academic leaders—one of four UNO faculty selected to enhance their skills. The initiative, led by the Office of the President, brings together Nebraska universities to prepare participants for higher education challenges.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Owana Marzia Moushi, an instructor at UNO College of Information Science & Technology, was featured on October 16th for her work in cybersecurity and her plan to teach hands-on courses. She said she is eager to mentor students with real projects — a move that brings her research on secure intelligent transportation systems into the classroom.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Brian Dorn—associate dean at UNO—was named a NU DEAL fellow for a two-year leadership program focused on building academic leadership skills; he joins three colleagues chosen by campus leadership and will participate in systemwide presentations and campus visits. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • NAI NP Dodge released its third quarter report on Omaha’s commercial real estate market, showing office vacancy dropping to 7.7 percent with rental rates rising to $25.42 and 1.6 million sq ft under construction. The report also noted retail vacancy at 4.4 percent and industrial rates at $8.54 with new developments underway—while Dillard’s and Toys R Us plan moves and other projects start next year.  Grow Omaha

  • Operation Football returned with scores and highlights from Thursday's Nebraska high school games—Buena Vista High forfeited its Friday game against Lincoln Southwest as Creighton Prep prepares for its key matchup at Westside.  KETV
  • Creighton basketball returns to the hardwood today at CHI Health Center when the team faces 16th-ranked Iowa State at 7:30 p.m. Sophomore forward Jackson McAndrew said the team aims to come together and get as good as it can—setting goals like a Final Four run and a Big East championship.  KETV
  • Omaha Women’s Golf senior Katie Ruge was named the Kwik Star Summit League Peak Golfer of the Week for the second time this season after she won her third individual title at the Big O Classic by seven strokes at 3-under par—with rounds of 68, 77, and 68. Her strong play helped the Mavericks win four team tournament trophies since she joined last season and she is averaging 72.6 strokes in 11 rounds.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Omaha Volleyball swept Oral Roberts on Thursday in Tulsa, winning the sets 25-10, 25-17, and 25-21. The Mavericks will play Denver on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT+ the win improves their standing as they continue their conference play.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Omaha Cross Country will host its second home meet today at 1 p.m. CT with Summit League teams South Dakota State, Kansas City and co-host Creighton joining Nebraska-Kearney, Buena Vista, Iowa Western CC, Midland and Mount Marty in the race. The event follows a two-week break that saw the Mavericks finish 17th at the Gans Creek Classic — a result that sets the stage for today’s competition.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Elmwood-Murdock freshman Jase Bornemeier returned to cross country running after enduring broken legs and multiple surgeries from a December car crash—his comeback shows his determination to recover.  WOWT
