ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Omaha Fire Department responded early Monday to a HAZMAT incident near 36th and D streets in South Omaha, evacuating a connected business and decontaminating three people after a small chemical plume was detected from a building door—officials said the leak posed no public risk.  WOWT
  • Three people were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash on West Dodge Road at 139th Street in Omaha around 8 p.m. Sunday and police arrested three drivers from a car meetup on Saturday for reckless driving, while the Huskers were ranked in the AP college football poll following their win over Maryland with Dylan Raiola throwing four touchdown passes and three interceptions.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • UNO’s Criss Library completed its first year of a national grant with the Great Plains Black History Museum—organizing over 100 boxes of archival materials on African American history for public use.   • A giant pumpkinhead towers over a spooky graveyard display near 84th and Weber—where tombstones, a curled zombie-like figure, and little girls watching from behind bars set the scene for 31 Days of Halloween in Omaha.   • Local filmmaker Nick Beaulieu will host a sold-out premiere screening and discussion of his documentary My Omaha at Dundee Theater tomorrow— the film examines racial, political and familial divides in the city. Tickets for further showings are available online from October 18th to 23rd.  WOWT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Omaha thrift stores are seeing a surge in shoppers fighting high prices as many younger customers turn to secondhand bargains — a sign of rising costs affecting budgets — and store managers report the trend is growing.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Criss Library will support International Open Access Week from Oct 20 to Oct 26 by offering access to free scholarly articles and helping UNO authors publish through DigitalCommons — its agreements with major publishers help lower publication costs and widen research impact.   • Officials released renderings for Omaha North High School’s new stadium, a project announced earlier by former Mayor Jean Stothert that will host football, soccer + other sports and include a press box, concessions, bathrooms, and equipment storage. Demolition starts this fall + the project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.  KETV
  • Criss Library’s Research and Instruction Services is integrating AI literacy into library instruction to help UNO faculty and students use AI tools responsibly.   • Randy Mattley, a communications specialist at UNO, received a Kudos Award from the NU System Board of Regents on October 13 for his leadership and creative work in communications. He guided a unified strategy covering 93 events and organized key anniversary ceremonies + his work supported long-term student and alumni success.  University of Nebraska Omaha

  • Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule said he was happy with his job at Nebraska and did not discuss his contract during a press conference on Monday as he addressed speculation about the Penn State opening—he wished fired coach James Franklin the best while stressing his focus on rebuilding a championship team ahead of Friday’s game at Minnesota. He added that his long ties with Penn State fuel his passion for football and his commitment to the community.  KETV
  • Creighton's men's basketball team is starting the season ranked No.23 in the AP preseason poll, marking its fourth straight ranking and the eighth time in program history. The Bluejays will face No.16 Iowa State on Friday in an exhibition game — a key test for the team.  KETV
