COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Omaha lost its local grocery store—leaving only one full-service store for four neighborhoods. The closure raises food desert concerns—prompting community leaders to consider ways to improve access to fresh food.  WOWT
  • Today, Omaha hosts the Farmers Market at the Old Market from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Farnam Fest at Blackstone Alley with live music starting at noon, and a Junkstock session at Sycamore Farms in Waterloo; tomorrow, the Farmers Market will run at Aksarben Village from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Junkstock will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. while free events like a fall cleanup, festival, and coat giveaway offer more community activities.  WOWT
  • Omaha leaders and Mayor John Ewing cut the ribbon earlier this week for Blackstone Alley, an outdoor event space near 39th and Farnam that lights up at night and was funded by ARPA funds, TIF Contribution Funding, a Douglas County Visitor Improvement Fund Grant and Blackstone BID contributions—this new venue will host local gatherings.  Grow Omaha

  • On Oct. 10, 1927, Omaha’s Orpheum Theater opened as a new larger venue after replacing an older theater lost to fire—nearly 3,000 people saw its first show and it quickly became a landmark in Omaha.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNO’s OMA x AI Conference in downtown Omaha brought together students, professionals, and community leaders to discuss how artificial intelligence is changing learning, work, and innovation with keynote speakers such as Chancellor Joanne Li and Mayor John Ewing. The event featured interactive sessions split by skill level and set the stage for ongoing workforce development—helping Omaha prepare for future technological advances.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • This October, UNO joins the global Cybersecurity Awareness Month effort to help students, faculty, and staff stay safe online by sharing advice on strong passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates, and spotting scams—actions that protect both personal and university data.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • UNO hosted the 2025 BOLD Civic Engagement Fellowship where young leaders from Bosnia and Herzegovina took part in workshops and community projects from August 17 to September 19+ the program was funded by the U.S. Embassy and led by UNO faculty and local city leaders to build global partnerships.  University of Nebraska Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Omaha is hosting a fall cleanup event today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—held at designated locations across the city—and invites residents to join and help maintain clean public spaces.  WOWT
  • City officials in Omaha announced that they will install traffic calming measures—lane markings and signage—on 30th Street between Grebe and Fillmore starting Tuesday, October 14 to reduce speeding after 148 crashes from 2018 to 2025; traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction during the two-week construction period.  KETV

  • Mike 'Jirsch' Jirschele retired after 17 seasons with the Storm Chasers and 48 years in baseball. The Kansas City Royals announced his retirement Friday—noting his record 1,214 wins and multiple championships—while praising his deep ties to Omaha.  WOWT
