COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A groundbreaking for a new $20 million youth center was held in Benson in 2024—starting a project by the Bay Omaha to build a 40,000 square foot facility that will include a music venue, an indoor skate park and an esports arena. The building will open in early 2027—providing local kids with a safe space to explore their interests. 3 News Now
- ➤ The annual PorchFestOMA is set for this weekend—offering over 80 free performances on 14 stages for the local community. The festival began as a small event in Ithaca and performers will be able to receive tips during their shows. KETV
- ➤ Girls Inc. broke ground on a new 36,000 square foot center in South Omaha—designed with indoor and outdoor classrooms, a multi-sports field and playground that will host youth programs while the nonprofit plans to add bilingual staff and hold a grand opening in December. WOWT
- ➤ Heartland Hope Mission is preparing its two food pantries in South and West Omaha to serve more families affected by the government shutdown and will use its South Omaha site on Thursday evenings for immediate support—case managers will help each family based on their needs. The nonprofit appeals to community members to donate canned corn, pasta, pasta sauce and side items to meet growing demand. KETV

- ➤ North Italia, a national restaurant chain under The Cheesecake Factory, will open its first Nebraska location on November 19 at Village Pointe — the restaurant is under construction in the former Bravo Cucina Italiana space and will serve handmade pasta, pizza and Italian-inspired dishes. - ➤ A University of Nebraska regent accused of DUI in a May 21 crash in Omaha’s Benson neighborhood that injured several people, including three children, faced direct confrontation Friday when the father of one victim demanded her resignation as she maintains her not guilty plea. WOWT

- ➤ Governor Jim Pillen’s vision to turn Nebraska crops into renewable fuels and bioplastics will boost the bioeconomy and create rural jobs while new energy projects are needed to meet a nearly 20% demand surge over the next decade—community support remains key to unlocking these opportunities. - ➤ Yesterday, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents held open comments on proposed budget cuts totaling more than $27 million—professors, staff, and students expressed concerns about transparency and the impact on academic programs. - ➤ The NU Board of Regents approved an intermediate design review Friday that unlocked $1.22 billion to start building the base and shell of the $2.19 billion Project Health hospital and research facility on the UNMC midtown campus—this facility will have more than 550 beds and train future health care professionals. - ➤ Nebraska officials issued a health alert for toxic blue-green algae at Maple Creek Recreation Area Lake in Colfax and at Rockford Lake in Gage, while Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson is removed from the alert—signs advise against swimming and visitors are told to avoid swallowing the water. WOWT
