COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local activists from the Omaha chapter of Strong Towns installed a homemade baby blue bench at a midtown bus stop to spur safer streets in a city built for cars—part of ongoing efforts to make walkways more inviting for pedestrians. The group has already pushed for pilot safety programs and better traffic controls as local leaders discuss long-term changes to reduce car dominance.  Flatwater Free Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Evacuations occurred Thursday afternoon near 24th and Wirt streets after a gas leak was reported at an office building around noon—Omaha Police, Fire and MUD assisted by closing streets from N 22nd to 25th and from Binney to Spencer.  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • State, city and county officials held a groundbreaking for the Global Market in South Omaha on October 2 after securing a $5.8 million award, and the renovated 16,500 square-foot building will house a commercial kitchen plus vendors to celebrate diverse cultures. Three projects share the funds, with $4.3 million allocated to the market and its first phase planned for fall 2026.  Nebraska Examiner

  • Omaha's new recycling drop-off location near 72nd and Farnam is open—residents must sort glass into purple bins and put other recyclables in green bins.  KETV

FINANCE NEWS

  • WalletHub's study shows that Nebraskans pay an average of $178 per month in student loan payments—ranking 39th among 50 states, with Vermont at $248 and Mississippi at $142. This analysis helps highlight where Nebraska stands in national student debt costs.  KFAB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 2,300 civilian workers at Offutt Air Force Base are furloughed and not receiving pay because of the government shutdown—federal officials have not yet announced when work will resume.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Today, the city of Omaha said it would buy back the Civic Square lot if White Lotus Group does not begin the agreed road, sidewalk, and utility work by Nov. 7—key improvements required since the contract was signed on Sept. 8—for their planned mixed-use development featuring affordable housing, retail, offices, and a downtown grocery store. Deputy City Attorney Jennifer Taylor said the developers had only just started road work, which is not enough progress nearly two years into the contract.  KETV
  • Mayor John Ewing Jr. held a news conference Thursday to address Bud Crawford’s traffic stop and stressed that the city will review traffic data and revise police protocols to ensure community fairness while protecting officers. He said he had spoken with Crawford after the incident and aims to boost community policing through deeper integration between the police and local residents—efforts meant to prevent future issues.  WOWT
  • A federal government shutdown forced nearly 2,300 Offutt Air Force Base workers to be furloughed and led Nebraska and Iowa lawmakers to give up their pay in protest. Other stories include Nebraska lawmakers asking for a briefing on converting McCook Work Ethic Camp into an ICE detention center—Des Moines superintendent Ian Roberts resigned after misrepresenting his degree, and Omaha Public Works is offering sand barrels to residents until December 1 to cope with slick roads.  KIOS

  • People will join the Council Bluffs Walk to End Alzheimer’s tomorrow at Iowa Western Community College with registration at 9 a.m. and a Promise Garden Ceremony at 10 a.m.—supporters seek to raise funds for research and care for Alzheimer’s patients while a second walk is set in Aksarben next Sunday.  3 News Now

  • Nebraska Baseball shared its 2026 schedule Wednesday, announcing 56 future games with 23 home games at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. Local matchups include games against Omaha on March 3 and Creighton on March 31 and April 14—key contests for fans—while the Big Ten Tournament will be held at Charles Schwab Field next year.  WOWT
  • Omaha Volleyball swept North Dakota 3-0 at Baxter Arena on Thursday night with senior Kali Jurgensmeier and freshman Faith Venable each recording 11 kills—Omaha will host North Dakota State at 5:00 p.m. CT on Saturday.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule discussed his team’s hard practice after a 30-27 loss to No. 21 Michigan and previewed Saturday’s game against Michigan State — an opportunity to break a losing streak that dates back to 2018.
