COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Omaha firefighters are preparing families for fire safety as Fire Prevention Week will begin Oct. 6 by urging residents to test smoke alarms, move flammable items away from stoves, and review escape plans—measures that can help prevent panic during an emergency. Firefighter Logan Clark and Captain Ryan Berney stressed that teaching children these steps is key to ensuring quick responses in a fire.  The Omaha News

  • Benson business owners face reduced customer access as sewer separation work along Maple Street closes roads and limits parking. Found Vintage Market owner Laci Mulick said her foot traffic dropped significantly, and the project is set to finish late 2026—adding to business challenges.  WOWT

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Bellevue families lost their cats after Honeydoo, tracked by an AirTag to the Humane Society, and Obie, found under a camper, were found dead—Bellevue Police are investigating and do not suspect a person is targeting animals.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Holland Performing Arts Center will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a concert Friday night that begins at 8:00 p.m. The event will feature more than a dozen acts — including the Omaha Symphony, Salem Baptist Church Choir, Alexis Arai, and others — and tickets cost $26.  3 News Now
  • Omaha residents displayed spooky Halloween yard haunts that began on October 1 near 36th Avenue and H Street; one show featured a graveyard with a (Grim Reaper) and a (skeleton band). More homes will add their own eerie setups each day in October.  KETV
  • Omaha Performing Arts president Joan Squires built the Holland Center from scratch using a world-class design team and a strong board — turning a modest setup with no budget or staff into a vibrant home for the arts. She now looks forward to celebrating its 20th anniversary and invites the community to come together.  KETV

  • The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index dropped below growth neutral when it fell to 49.8 from 50.5 in August—marking the second decline in three months.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNO hosted its fifth annual Future of Work Symposium on Sept 17 where College of Business students showcased start-ups and shared growth plans with local entrepreneurs and faculty leading breakout sessions — the event highlighted practical sessions like the Maverick Venture Fund that offer hands-on investment experience. CBA alumni and students demonstrated ventures including meal-prep services and property services — efforts aimed at strengthening business skills for tomorrow’s careers.  University of Nebraska Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Omaha are invited to give input on the future streetcar design by completing an online survey open until October 7th—responses will guide the design announced later this year. The streetcar will operate in 2028 while utility relocations continue until 2027.  KETV
  • Nearly 2,300 civilian employees at Offutt Air Force Base were furloughed during the government shutdown that left workers without pay, and only a few civilians and active military personnel remained working. Kris Pierce—chief of public affairs for the base’s 55th wing—said officials offered support options and hope to end the shutdown next week.  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Omaha, many young people are using AI chatbots for mental health support as traditional care remains out of reach—experts warn these tools may fall short in handling crises and should not replace professional help. National data shows nearly half of youth face mental health challenges, making careful use of AI essential.  The Omaha News
  • Omaha's CHI Health Breast Health Center offered a single-session approach for breast cancer care on Oct 1 that let patients meet with a team including a breast surgeon, oncologists, and a nurse navigator—all in one visit. The center, the only triple-accredited breast health facility in Nebraska, allowed patients to bring unlimited support from family or friends.  KETV

  • At the 7th annual Omaha Sports Commission Awards Show on May 29, Ana Bellinghausen became the first woman to win the Steve Pivovar Sports Media Person of the Year award—she thanked her mentors and vowed to inspire more women in sports reporting.
