  • Downtown parking will be free for several hours Saturday as the city celebrates boxing champ Bud Crawford's return with a parade — parking meters will be waived to ease congestion.  WOWT
  • KETV’s 7 Can Help has partnered with the Nebraska Diaper Bank to support local families by distributing over 3 million diapers each year since 2014—offering ways for community members to donate, host drives, or volunteer at the Omaha warehouse.  KETV
  • Omaha food banks face growing demand as the federal government cuts food assistance and ends its annual hunger report. During Hunger Action Month, local groups see more residents seeking help with Omaha Steaks donating over 4,000 pounds of protein—boosting supplies for those in need.  WOWT
  • Former Nebraska Liquor Control Commission director Hobert Rupe was indicted on seven federal charges for allegedly protecting Lincoln strip clubs in exchange for favors—Cornerstone Christian School’s former bookkeeper Joya Kinney was sentenced to nine months in prison for embezzling nearly half a million dollars. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Luke Vickery from Omaha's Weather Leader reported that today is mostly clear with temperatures near 83 degrees across Omaha and nearby areas—while a weak front is expected Friday evening with only light breezes and no rain. The forecast shows nearly cloudless skies over the next few days with highs in the low 80s and cool overnight temperatures keeping conditions comfortable.  KETV
  • An updated state climate report submitted Wednesday showed that Nebraska is getting warmer and wetter, confirming 2014 predictions and warning that rising temperatures and heavier rains will put more stress on water resources and agriculture. The 312-page report details increased irrigation demand, more frequent heat extremes, and intense precipitation events—signaling a challenging shift for the state’s climate.  Nebraska Examiner

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Micah Chaffee, a former Nebraska Legislature attorney, is set to become the new director of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission when he starts Oct. 1 as the commission holds its hearings—this leadership change follows the resignation of former director Hobert Rupe amid federal corruption charges.  Omaha World-Herald
  • State Sen. John Fredrickson of Omaha announced on Wednesday his bid for reelection in District 20 from 72nd to 144th Street; he won his 2022 race by less than 100 votes. He vows to work across party lines to expand health care access and spur economic growth—efforts that earned him endorsements from local leaders—aimed at supporting working families.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Ralston Board of Education President Robin Richards is running as an independent for District 12 in the Nebraska Legislature because she believes lawmakers have lost sight of their duty to care for Nebraskans—she supports transparency, public education, smart economic development, property tax relief and protecting the doctor–patient relationship. Richards received just under 48% of the vote in 2022 and said if a primary is needed it will take place in May with the general election set for November 2026.  Omaha World-Herald
  • On Sept. 23, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners granted a two-week layover for the Apostolic Center in a tax dispute and approved nearly $300,000 in health contracts while also recognizing longtime employees Freddie Brown and Sharon Cerney — a move meant to improve communication with county officials.  Flatwater Free Press
  • Today, the city will close 29th Street between Farnam and Harney from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as construction pours new concrete for the Harney Street Bridge approach—reopening the ramp to southbound I-480 for weekend use.  WOWT
