COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit groups in Omaha have been active as SHARE Omaha released its Fall 2025 Student Volunteering Guide, the Tri Faith Initiative held a ribbon cutting for its interactive walking tour on September 14, Victory Boxing club raised $20,000 of a $100,000 goal for expansion, Neighborgood opened a new food pantry near 66th and Cornhusker Road, and Bellevue Junior Sports Association celebrated 50 years of serving over 4,000 youth. No More Empty Pots will host a Supper Club on Saturday — offering a three course meal at its rooftop garden that features local chefs and networking for community changemakers.  Grow Omaha

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Greater Omaha Chamber launched the Midtown Small Business Resiliency Fund to distribute about $1 million to small businesses on Farnam Street west of Turner Boulevard that were affected by streetcar construction, and funds donated by an anonymous supporter were first given in mid August (property owners will help tenants with cash or reduced rent over the next two years).  Grow Omaha

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lauritzen Gardens will reopen its renovated conservatory tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the makeover adds a plant library, new climate sensors, improved pathways, and mounted staghorn ferns to boost the visitor experience. Members enjoyed early access before the public opening after more than a year of renovations.  3 News Now
  • KANEKO’s Grown Up & Me event will take place on Sunday, September 21 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., where young artists will work with adults as part of the Beyond the Finishing Point exhibition. Meanwhile, the Nebraska Arts Council’s Artist Roster applications remain open until December 1, the Omaha Conservatory of Music announced scholarships for over 90 students, and five new sculptures are being installed at the Gene Leahy Mall Sculpture Garden between September 17 and 24—set to remain for three years.  Grow Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Omaha Streetcar Authority approved its final utility contract with Hawkins Construction for the Turner Utility Construction Package, a $15 million project that covers sewer, OPPD and MUD work in Turner Park—Hawkins is also moving forward with the Utility West project and reconstruction of Harney Street and Farnam Street bridges.  Grow Omaha
  • Former state senator Loran Schmit—an advocate for rural Nebraska and father of the state's ethanol industry—died on Wednesday at his Bellwood home at age 96; his legislative work helped secure 1,800 high-paying local jobs while funeral services are pending.  Nebraska Examiner

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Nebraska instructor said that many death certificates miss drug overdoses and that some counties may have undercounted over 200 overdose deaths across the state. His research shows Nebraska got only $63 per person for treatment funds—the lowest rate in the nation.  Flatwater Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Omaha’s mayor announced a parade for homegrown boxing champion Terence 'Bud' Crawford scheduled for next Saturday to honor his return to the city. Local musicians including longtime friend Rosendo Robles will perform during the celebration, echoing a similar event in 2023.  WOWT
  • Creighton University announced a $300 million project to upgrade 11 athletic facilities for its Division I athletes as part of the Fly Together initiative. The project covers 700,000 square feet and includes a new fitness center, renovated Sokol Arena and Ruth Scott Training Center, and a new pedestrian thoroughfare called Jaywalk— a groundbreaking ceremony will be held before the year ends.  KETV
