COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Arthur Bell was born on Sept. 14, joining four earlier generations in sharing the same birthday, linking him to his great-great-grandfather Wilber, great-grandmother Addie, his dad Fred, and his mom Emma. The Bell family has asked Guinness World Records to recognize this rare legacy—marking a unique birthday tradition in Omaha.  WOWT
  • Local officials withheld documents about a planned ICE detention center in McCook and noted that new immigration policies have affected crime victims. A person died after a train struck him near 26th and Q, dairy cattle were found with avian influenza with little impact, heavy equipment began moving at Omaha Crossroads for a new parking garage and Gamescapes, and Mayor Ewing is finalizing plans for boxer Terence Bud Crawford's homecoming celebration.  KIOS

  • Lauritzen Gardens will add an elevated walkway that will connect the Visitor and Education Center to the Garden of Memories—separating visitors from vehicles and improving garden views.  Grow Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Omaha City Council approved up to $50 million in bonds for affordable housing and improved bikeways—using tax-increment financing from urban redevelopment—and set a vote next week on a contract with Front Porch Investments to invest $40 million in new affordable homes.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Residents in the historic Florence neighborhood have seen long-planned steps to slow speeding after a dangerous incident near Crayon Castle daycare last December—city officials and law enforcement have introduced street paintings, curb extensions and are planning an electronic speed sign to enforce a 30 mph limit along North 30th Street.  WOWT
  • Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order to provide property tax relief to Nebraska residents by directing the state's Property Tax Administrator to certify and distribute unused funds boosted by increased casino gambling revenue — this move will add an extra $20 million for taxpayers.  KETV
  • A long-term project to reconstruct the 72nd and L interchange in Omaha is underway—crews closed the eastbound L entrance and exit ramps at 72nd as they begin work on the site.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Omaha Fire Department colleagues are standing by firefighter Matthew McDonnell, 39, who has served for 17 years and was diagnosed with glioblastoma in June. The department will host a spaghetti and meatball feed — with auctions and raffles — at the Omaha Firefighters Hall on November 23rd to help cover his family's medical costs.  KETV

  • Bud Crawford became the first boxer to win three unified division titles when he defeated Canelo Alvarez on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium — longtime ringside physician Dr. Brian Conroy, who has known Crawford since his teen years, treated a cut that required five stitches after a headbutt.  WOWT
  • Downtown construction closed 10th Street between Dodge and Capitol Avenue and 8th Street southbound from Dodge to Douglas on Tuesday, which slowed traffic for fans attending the 6:30 p.m. Nebraska vs Creighton volleyball game at CHI Center. Drivers used a detour via Capitol Avenue to 8th Street for Lot A access — the closures are scheduled to remain until the end of October.  KETV
  • Yesterday, No. 1 Nebraska volleyball defeated No. 18 Creighton in five sets at CHI Health Center before a sellout crowd of 17,675 fans. Head coaches Dani Busboom Kelly and Brian Rosen made their debuts—highlighting the Huskers’ continued unbeaten season.  WOWT
