BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Maverick Store held its year-long MavMania flash sale on Sept. 10 after a supply delay—selling a unique T-shirt with UNO’s bull logo for $9.50 in sizes small to 3XL at the Milo Bail Student Center and online. Future flash sales are scheduled for October, November, December, February, March and April.  The Gateway
  • Silicon Prairie Startup Week 2025 will bring together entrepreneurs, investors and community leaders in Omaha and Lincoln starting September 27 and continuing October 6—11. The program features a 10 Hour Challenge in Lincoln and a pitch competition in Omaha with a $10,000 prize—events open to the public with sessions on Artificial Intelligence and talent recruitment.  Grow Omaha
  • Brookfield Properties sold the former Younker’s building at Westroads Mall to Dillard’s on September 5—Dillard’s will gut the vacant anchor space, add 32,000 sq. ft., and relocate its Oak View Mall store with construction starting immediately and an opening planned in 2027. The mall will also welcome a family-friendly retailer into the former Forever 21 space by Black Friday to boost occupancy to 98 percent.  Grow Omaha

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Soybean farmers say they are worried as harvest nears because China has not yet ordered any crops—legislators from Nebraska and Iowa noted that ongoing tariff disputes have cut off this key market and pushed production costs higher.  3 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A report from the Buffett Early Childhood Institute shows that a childcare shortage is affecting over 4,000 children in the metro — families may soon struggle to find enough quality care.  WOWT
  • The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 108 Nebraska high school students as semifinalists for the 2026 scholarship program after their 2024 PSAT scores were reviewed. Semifinalists must now submit detailed applications and additional test scores+finalists will be announced in February with scholarship winners chosen beginning in April.  Omaha World-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Omaha held a ribbon cutting for its new Baby Bob pedestrian bridge — it connects to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Nebraska Rep. Adrian Smith honored WWII veteran Donald McPherson—believed to be the last surviving ace fighter pilot and native of Adams—on Capitol Hill recently. He earned a Congressional Gold Medal and three Distinguished Flying Crosses before passing away at 103 in August.  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new UNMC study found that one in three recovering alcoholics in early sobriety are in a danger zone for anxiety and depression and may risk relapse—researchers tracked 1,000 patients over six weeks and noted that about five percent had persistently high symptoms and severe PTSD or other mental health issues.  KIOS

  • The Arbour at Heartwood Preserve will unveil two model homes during the Street of Dreams tour from September 12-14 and 19-21—this upscale neighborhood covers 30 acres within a 500-acre development west of 144th Street between West Dodge Road and Pine Street.  Grow Omaha

  • Omaha Athletics raised a record $6.13 million during the 2024-25 academic year from 2,661 donors and grew its support by more than 170 percent over the past four years.
