ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Tuesday morning, Omaha fire and police crews responded to a gas leak near Leavenworth Park at 7:30 a.m. near 35th and Leavenworth and had it under control by 8:30 a.m.—officials allowed the gas to evaporate before reopening the area, and no injuries were reported. KETV
- ➤ Crews responded to a gas leak near 35th Avenue — located near Leavenworth Street — just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday that briefly slowed the morning commute in Midtown Omaha. WOWT
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Omaha chef Jeremy McCoy became a local sensation after a plate he served to a police officer sparked a fundraiser that raised over $20,000 for his food truck dream. He is now thanking supporters by operating a temporary truck in North Omaha Tuesday—hoping to serve his meals soon on his own truck. WOWT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A federal grand jury indicted 14 people on Monday—charges include sex trafficking in Omaha and several weapons-related offenses—and they now face potential prison time and fines if convicted. WOWT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Repair crews in downtown Omaha will begin work on Sept.8 to fix a sinkhole that exposed a damaged OPPD duct line and a broken sewer pipe—officials said the repairs are urgent as heavy rain worsened soil erosion and raised safety hazards. The city and building owners could not agree on permanent fixes, so temporary measures including street closures and a portable pump will be used during the repair process. WOWT
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Omaha City Council approved moving $150,000 from Keno revenue to help four local food banks as part of a funding agreement with Kearney. Councilman Festersen explained the funds will buy food supplies — a one-time boost aimed at easing growing food insecurity amid federal SNAP cuts. WOWT
- ➤ The Omaha City Council adopted a comprehensive Poverty Elimination Action Plan on August 26 to address challenges in housing, jobs, and health—the plan was drafted by UNO experts with input from local residents and non-profits.
