CRIME NEWS

  • Omaha Police arrested a motorcyclist accused of driving 115mph on I-680 during rush hour without valid registration — his motorcycle was impounded and he faces a court appearance.  KFAB
  • Omaha police are searching for missing 12-year-old Ava Little Eagle; she was last seen after midnight Tuesday near 39th and Vinton carrying a large backpack—if anyone knows her whereabouts, they should call 911.  KETV
  • An Omaha man accused of fatally shooting 54-year-old Robert Allen near 20th Street and Missouri Avenue on July 4 was ordered to trial after detectives linked 45-year-old Cortney Hansen to the murder—surveillance footage captured his distinctive motorcycle minutes before six gunshots were fired.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNO and MCC launched the Momentum project to help transfer students move between schools with smoother credit transfer, coordinated financial aid, and improved social integration. The two schools will work together over the next five years using this plan—led by expert administrative teams—to address transfer challenges.  WOWT
  • Victor Winter, a computer science professor at University-Nebraska Omaha, said that artificial intelligence has grown fast and challenges old homework methods. He now teaches courses that require AI use—efforts designed to help students learn and adjust to new technology.  KETV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, North Omaha residents and environmentalists urged OPPD’s board to halt coal burning at the local plant — pressing the utility to meet its promise to end coal-fired generation.  Omaha World-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Omaha City Council is meeting Tuesday at 2 p.m. to consider key items including Mayor John Ewing Jr.’s recommended budget, a $1.465 million grant for a first responder drone program, changes to landscaping rules and the food inspection code, a new Tarp and Skeet Coordinator role, and an adjustment to the retirement age for select public safety workers. The council will also hold a public hearing on an update to the ordinance regarding unauthorized encampments on public property — decisions that will steer future city policy.  WOWT
  • The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on Monday for Sabina Carmona-Lorenzo—a Glenn Valley Foods worker detained in a June 10 Omaha immigration raid—asking for her release from a North Platte jail after a judge granted bond that was blocked by officials.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Omaha Supernovas season tickets for 2026 are now on sale as new co-owner and GM John Cook held his first press conference today. Former Nebraska volleyball coach Cook came out of retirement to boost pro volleyball and said his global recruiting has drawn strong support—he added the team signed former Husker Leyla Blackwell last Thursday.  KETV
  • Dani Busboom Kelly—former standout and championship coach—has been hired as the head coach of the Husker volleyball team after a quiet transition plan with retiring coach Cook and Athletic Director Troy Dannen.
