CRIME NEWS

  • Omaha Police are investigating the death of 67-year-old Kathy Snider as a homicide by neglect by her caretaker, 53-year-old Nicky Budlong who was booked for manslaughter, abuse of a vulnerable adult and theft, and the investigation continues.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Omaha Fire Department added a new engine Monday and welcomed Engine 2 with a push-in ceremony — a tradition that dates back to the 1800s. The engine, its 25th in service, will boost emergency response downtown and in nearby districts and will be stationed at the Central Fire Station at 15th and Jackson Streets.  KETV
  • Several small roadwork projects in Omaha will cause delays as key routes are adjusted—southbound 72nd Street near Dodge will have lane restrictions for two months for curb and sidewalk work while southbound 60th Street between Grover and the I-80 interchange will operate on one lane for one month; downtown, 16th Street near the Orpheum Theater will close for one month for a streetcar project and gas main relocation.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Omaha health officials report a dangerous drop in blood donations as shelves remain bare—this shortage may force doctors to delay surgeries and affect cancer patients who need regular transfusions.  WOWT
  • Omaha is hosting the International Association of Forensic Nurses Annual Conference at CHI Health Center as over 750 forensic nursing professionals gather from August 18th to August 21st. The event offers workshops, networking and free time for exploring Omaha—showing the city’s strong role as a meetings and events destination.  Grow Omaha

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Metonic has begun construction of Blair Crossing Apartments, a $27 million, 132-unit complex with a pool, fitness center and dog park that marks Blair's first major multifamily housing project in 25 years. City officials approved tax increment financing and a $300,000 grant, and the first building will open next spring while the complete project is set to finish in fall 2026 — a move to ease the local housing shortage.  Omaha World-Herald
