  • Omaha’s homeless camps have become more visible as residents in encampments on Dodge Street face an order to leave by Aug. 14 while city officials push direct-to-housing programs—service providers are working with many, including Tonya Wascher, to move them into more stable living conditions.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Girls Inc. detailed plans for its new Emma Lozier Center in South Omaha at 2108 L Street near South High School—its nearly $35 million, 36,000 sq. ft. facility will serve 300 girls with a full-size gym, maker space and instructional kitchen. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Omaha Police and Fire Rescue responded to a deadly crash on Pacific Street near I-680 at about 12:15 p.m.—two people died, four others were taken to the hospital and traffic was blocked at the I-680 interchange.  WOWT
  • Omaha Police and Fire Rescue responded to a fatal two-vehicle crash at 9:30 a.m. August 7th at the interchange of Highway 275 and Meigs Street near I-680, and investigators are working to determine the cause.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A stretch of 108th Street in Northwest Omaha will get safety improvements starting Monday, August 11th after a study found 289 crashes from 2018 to 2025 with seven serious injuries. The project will change the road from two lanes in each direction to one lane plus a center turn lane, lower the speed limit from 45 to 30 MPH, and add 2.8 miles of bike lanes—along with a higher visibility intersection at 108th and Emmet Streets.  KETV
  • Nebraska’s State Advisory Board for Behavioral Health urged lawmakers on Thursday to secure funding for long-term mental health and substance abuse treatment, citing potential savings of over $300 million from assisted outpatient therapy—this approach aims to lessen costs linked to homelessness, crime and hospitalizations—Chairman Tim Heller said. The board will distribute its recommendations to state senators ahead of key budget decisions.  WOWT
