Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 8th of August.
Good morning, Omaha.
Several major events this weekend will lead to road closures & heavy traffic across metro Omaha.
Closures affect routes for the Offutt Air Show on Fort Crook Road, the downtown Maha Festival on 8th Street, cycling events in Aksarben and Papillion, and the Pinnacle Bank Championship near 204th and Maple.
Omaha's first grief center opened near 78th and Cass to give help to neighbors dealing with loss, and a full-time therapist will be hired with services starting this fall — the building’s design has no right angles to show that grief is not simple.
Les Schwab Tire Center is set to open two new west Omaha stores; construction has begun on an 8,300 sqft center southwest of 204th (F Street) and the retailer will build another store southeast of 165th (West Maple Road).
Omaha Bagel Company is opening its first brick-and-mortar storefront near 55th and Leavenworth after years of selling at local farmers markets — the store will serve bagels Wednesday through Friday mornings while retaining weekend market sales.
Today, Omaha by Design hosts Open Omaha, allowing free tours of nearly 50 local venues.
Meanwhile, the Benson district and Heartland Park stage arts festivals with indie rock acts, Comic Con Nebraska returns at CHI Health Center, and LaRo Latin Dance Studios opens in Ralston to expand the salsa scene.
Tora Tora Tora will display historic WWII planes at the Offutt Air Show later this month.
First Alert 6's Maria Cade spoke with Patrick Hutchins today about the exhibit honoring the aviation legacy.
Comic Con Nebraska returns this weekend at the CHI Health Center with special guests, panel discussions, cosplay, exhibitors and tabletop gaming.
Locals can look forward to an event that brings together comics and pop culture in a vibrant setting.
Maria Cade interviewed several participants ahead of the Offutt Air Show at Offutt Air Force Base, where Red Bull Pilot Kevin Coleman and Precision Exotics' Eric Nelson previewed interactive experiences including WWII planes and luxury car rides.
The event is expected to draw local visitors later this week.
The Maha Festival is set to take over Heartland of America Park today with performances by UK indie rock breakout Wet Leg & local favorite Bright Eyes.
Attendees can enjoy live music and community celebration at this free event.
LaRo Latin Dance Studios will soon open in Ralston to expand the local salsa scene with dance nights, classes, and live performances.
The new studio is set to add to the growing cultural events in the metro.
