- ➤ Girls Inc. revealed plans for a new $35 million center in South Omaha near Omaha South High School — the 36,000‑square‑foot building is designed to serve 300 girls daily with a gym, kitchen and classrooms. State funds of $11.2 million will support the project, with construction beginning in October and completion expected in 2027. Nebraska Examiner
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Omaha Fire Department responded to a house fire early Thursday near Midtown Omaha — no injuries were reported and authorities confirmed the incident was isolated. WOWT
- ➤ The CSB has launched an investigation into the fatal explosion at Horizon Biofuels in Fremont on July 29, which claimed the lives of 8-year-old Fayeah, 12-year-old Hayven — and their father, Dylan D. Danielson, as firefighters worked to keep burning debris under control. WOWT

- ➤ Omaha police arrested a wanted fugitive armed with a handgun at a rental home near 49th and Franklin streets Thursday morning—Franklin Street was shut down during the operation that ended around 9:15 a.m. WOWT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Omaha Police Officer's Union accused State Senator Terrell McKinney of stirring up hostility when he flipped off and cursed at officers at a shooting scene this past weekend (the union posted its reaction on social media). McKinney said he exchanged words with police because he believed they were trying to break the rights of community members (he stressed he would never stop anyone from getting lifesaving help). KIOS
- ➤ Omaha’s Vision Zero project will reconfigure 108th Street from Fort to Emmet (changing it to one lane each way with a center turn lane and bike lanes on both sides) starting Monday, Aug. 11 to improve safety and reduce traffic and trash near homes, a change welcomed by residents like Natalie Leonard. - ➤ North Omaha residents attended a workshop Thursday night to weigh in on the Innovation District Plan that will use $30 million from the Legislature for job creation and affordable housing—project leaders will use this input to map the district and begin property acquisition this fall. WOWT
- ➤ Nebraska’s new paid sick leave law takes effect Oct. 1 and requires that most workers earn one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked while exempting small businesses, minors under 16, seasonal agricultural workers and independent contractors. Employers must post rule notices by Sept. 15 and may face fines up to $5,000 – experts expect the Department of Labor to clarify any remaining issues over time. KETV

- ➤ Methodist Health System in Omaha started using community health workers last year to help patients with housing, food, and transportation needs.
