- ➤ Fires still burn inside the burned Horizon Biofuels building in Fremont as firefighters use large water streams from a safe distance (200 feet away) while a recent storm helped the flames spread (raising worries over the unstable structure) and officials continue monitoring the scene. WOWT
- ➤ One person was seriously hurt when a driver crashed off the I-480 exit ramp near the Martha Street off-ramp at 12:30 a.m. yesterday — police are investigating alcohol as a factor in the crash. KETV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Omaha police arrested a disgruntled restaurant employee from Lula B's Breakfast, Brunch, and Bar near 10th and Dodge after the employee threatened a coworker with a knife on Wednesday morning and was later booked for terroristic threats—no one was injured. WOWT
- ➤ Jordan M. Thomas, 56, of Palmyra, is scheduled to appear in Cass County Court on Aug. 26 on a misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide charge stemming from him allegedly reversing his snowplow and striking trooper Kyle McAcy (a 10-year veteran) on Feb. 17 when McAcy was responding to a crash near mile marker 424 (a conviction could bring up to a year in jail). - ➤ In July, Gov Pillen appointed the new School Financing Review Commission that includes state Treasurer Tom Briese. He said the commission will provide recommendations to update Nebraska’s school funding formula and shift K-12 funding away from property taxpayers—aiming to ease the property tax crisis. KETV

- ➤ Beginning next week, Omaha residents will be able to use Metro Transit's new Metro Flex service to hail a van ride via a phone app that takes them to the nearest bus stop—improving access in areas without regular bus routes. The pilot will launch on August 13 in North, South and West Omaha with 18 vans available and free rides offered for the first two months. Omaha World-Herald
- ➤ Omaha has seen a steady rise in homeless camps—Mayor John Ewing is set to launch multiple task forces as part of his proposed city budget—to address the growing issue. WOWT
- ➤ Nebraska sued the California company Savage Enterprises for selling synthetic THC vapes and gummies in the state — products with dangerously high Delta-8 THC levels and kid-friendly packaging that may attract children and teens. Attorney General Mike Hilgers said the suit seeks to stop the sales and recover civil penalties. KIOS
