COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 26, Creighton University’s REACH Program partnered with City Sprouts to host pop-up farmers markets that provided free fresh produce to neighbors in marginalized Omaha areas—one at Comunidad Maya Pixan Ixim from 8 a.m. to noon and one at Mount Calvary Community Church from 9 a.m. to noon until supplies ran out.  KETV
  • Omaha nonprofits are working to help tenants at City View Apartments at 604 S. 22nd St. leave before eviction, as Friday was the last day for most to move and help ends on July 31; they are using funds set aside for a youth program & need more city support to cover the $400,000 relocation cost. The building has long faced health and safety issues, leaving some residents with few housing options and burdening local organizations financially.  Omaha World-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Omaha police responded at 2:25 p.m. Saturday to a reported cutting near 39th+P Streets that injured two people and sent them to a local hospital with no word on arrests or their current condition.  WOWT

  • The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha opened its first exhibit showcasing intern artwork, with intern MC Daubendiek presenting a photo gallery of self-portraits in CD cases and portraits drawn on duct tape — a project proposed and organized by the interns that will lead to more work in the future.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into the University of Nebraska at Omaha after a complaint alleged that two scholarship programs favor minority and foreign-born students. The review covers the Dreamer’s Pathway Scholarship (for residents with DACA status) and HDR Scholarship (which gives priority to underrepresented groups) and UNO said it will cooperate with the inquiry while reviewing its policies.  The Gateway

  • Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood was elected as the new chair of the Main Street Caucus this week — he previously served as vice chair and replaced South Dakota Rep. Dusty Johnson who stepped down — reflecting leadership changes in the group.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Phil Smith, a local Omaha doctor who built the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and cared for Ebola patients, died Tuesday at age 78 and is remembered as a devoted mentor, husband and father. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at First Central Congregational Church — his work set a new standard in fighting deadly diseases.  Omaha World-Herald
