CRIME NEWS

  • Daniel Lambert, who was on Omaha Crime Stoppers' most wanted list, was charged with theft, operating a vehicle to avoid arrest, and terroristic threats on Friday after he and a woman took a test drive at a dealership and he threatened four passengers when officers stopped the vehicle; he was arrested in Iowa earlier this week and transferred to Douglas County jail (a judge set a $200,000 bond).  KETV

  • Farmers in Nebraska received more rain than normal in July that boosted their crops—yet they face high land taxes and low prices for corn and soybeans as harvest season nears. Land values fell 3% since February, but acre costs stay steep and many hope crop prices will soon rebound.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The contractor for the former AltEn ethanol plant near Mead said 15,000 tons of pesticide-contaminated byproduct will be removed and hauled to a landfill by the end of summer; subcontractors have already moved over 130,000 tons of wet cake. Engineers will grade the site and plant grass once NDWEE approves the plan — fieldwork for the next phase will begin in 2026 — ensuring proper stormwater management.  Omaha World-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor John Ewing said he is committed to fixing a large sinkhole on 16th Street in downtown Omaha but cautioned that legal disputes among building owners, OPPD and waste management mean repairs may take three to six months—city officials met with affected parties two weeks ago to plan work on pavement removal, foundation repairs and sewer line fixes.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Retired Omaha eye surgeon Mark Johnston launched his campaign for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District—he said his experience connecting with patients will help him bring care to Congress.  Omaha World-Herald

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New Visions Homeless Services has acquired 10 acres near 96th and Cady to build 46 one bedroom units for senior veterans with Omaha Housing Authority ensuring tenants pay no more than 30% of their income for rent—early work on the project will begin in 2026 while additional proposals for mixed-use or workforce housing on the remaining land are accepted through August 22.  WOWT
