  • Omaha residents can look forward to a busy weekend of free events as the 21st Playing with Fire summer concert series starts today at The Slowdown at 6:30 p.m.—featuring first-time local performers. An open house at the Bemis Center along with Farmers Markets in the Old Market and Aksarben Village and additional concerts and festivals round out the schedule through July 27.  WOWT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 24, 1930, the Big Dipper roller coaster at Krug Park, now known as Gallagher Park in Benson, crashed when a bolt came loose, killing four and injuring 17 and leading the city to ban roller coasters.  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Union Pacific reported a Q2 adjusted profit of $1.8 billion with per-share earnings of $3.03—up from $2.71 last year—as revenue grew to $6.2 billion while shares reached $233.30 before market open. The company is also in merger talks with Norfolk Southern that could combine the largest and smallest of the six major freight railroads pending regulatory review.  KETV

  • Police responded at 12:56 a.m. Thursday to a shooting at 40th and Corby in North Omaha and found a woman critically injured by a gunshot wound.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska’s state climatologist Deborah Bathke, Ph.D., and UNL extension educator Eric Hunt, Ph.D., discussed extreme climate risks on the latest episode of Consider This. They explained how rising temperatures—shifts in precipitation and wildfire threats may impact farming and community safety.  University of Nebraska Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer announced Thursday that she advanced over $18 million in funding for critical water infrastructure projects—this package will upgrade the McCook water treatment plant, improve the Santee Sioux Tribe’s water source, and repair sewer systems in other communities. The funds, part of the 2026 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, will support projects in areas including Greeley, Gothenburg, Farwell, Genoa, Shelby, Valparaiso, and Ong.  WOWT
