  • Bikers from across the country gathered at the Granary in Ralston for Omaha Bike Week where they enjoyed live music, a bike cruise and other activities. Organizers set up water stations and an indoor option to guard against the severe heat — doors open at 11 a.m. on Sunday and the main bike show will begin then and finish by 6 p.m.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A funding freeze from the federal Department of Education delayed $1.7 million meant for Omaha after-school programs, which accounted for about 20% of Collective for Youth’s budget. Local leaders at Kids Can Community Center warn that if funding cuts continue—programs may face forced closures or consolidations.  KETV
  • Omaha City Council approved planning documents Tuesday for the expansion of Completely KIDS campus at the northwest corner of 24th and St Mary's Avenue—where the future Henry Davis Center will offer early education classrooms and mental health spaces as rising demand is shown by 1,154 kids and adults served in 2023-2024.  3 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska became the first government here to legalize and regulate both medicinal and adult recreational cannabis—its Tribal Council passed a unanimous vote and the new Title 51 Cannabis Control Code took effect Tuesday. The law sets up a Cannabis Regulatory Commission, requires steps from seed to sale, and uses tax revenue to support health, education, housing and economic growth while protecting tribal sovereignty.  Nebraska Examiner
  • The Metropolitan Utilities District filed a lawsuit in Douglas County District Court on Friday against Hawkins Construction Company for negligent work on a 2023 project at the Florence Water Treatment Plant that released over 14 million gallons of water—causing flooding and temporary water outages while seeking more than $5,000,000 in damages.  KETV
  • Omaha City Council President Danny Begley moved a walkability study on 13th Street off the consent agenda Tuesday morning so residents could share concerns about speeding cars and lack of parking in Little Bohemia—this study will cost more than $145,000 and is set to last 100 days—as new apartments increase pedestrian traffic.  KETV

  • Several families in Omaha and the surrounding area are now facing delays on their custom homes after Davis Custom Homes halted communication—subcontractors have warned that unpaid work may lead to liens as 85% of construction funds have already been withdrawn.
