- ➤ Early today at 2 a.m., emergency crews responded to a crash on I-480 near 10th Street in downtown Omaha—three people were taken to hospital—and the interstate is closed for cleanup. WOWT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Federal officers arrested two El Salvadorian nationals on Wednesday, July 9—30-year-old Rene Escobar Ochoa was taken in Omaha and another man, whose identity is withheld and is on El Salvador’s 100 Most Wanted list, was also apprehended—with federal and local agencies initiating removal proceedings and coordinating with international partners. - ➤ On July 6 at 10 p.m., a Douglas County K-9 deputy pulled over a blue pickup on I-80 in Omaha and flagged the driver as an alleged MS-13 member, which led Homeland Security to arrest him—Rene Saul Escobar Ochoa—and a gang kingpin, Melvin Alejandro Varela Perez, accused of multiple homicides and drug trafficking, with the suspect apprehended in North Omaha and the kingpin detained in Council Bluffs. - ➤ A former STRATCOM employee pleaded guilty to passing classified defense information to a Ukrainian woman—he now faces up to 10 years in prison with sentencing scheduled on Oct. 8. 3 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UNO announced that for the next school year tuition will rise by 5% and select courses, including those in Aviation and Criminal Justice, will cost more due to extra resource needs — these fees will appear on student accounts by July 25. - ➤ On Thursday, Nebraska Task Force One and the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said they are helping local search and rescue teams in Kerr County after the July 4 flood in Texas’s Hill Country. The 45-member team—including two canine teams—left Lincoln on July 7, reached San Antonio on July 8, and will work for two weeks in muddy, debris-filled conditions. WOWT

- ➤ Tom Mcleay, president of Clarity Development, presented plans to renovate historic commercial buildings and add new market-rate apartments in the Little Bohemia district near 13th & William, with the renovation portion costing $6.2 million and new construction valued at $34 million.
