  • The Texas Supreme Court overturned the $89.6 million jury judgment against Omaha-based Werner Enterprises — a ruling tied to a December 2014 crash that killed a 7-year-old boy — and set aside the penalty imposed after the incident.  Omaha World-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Omaha police arrested 45-year-old Cortney Hansen on Tuesday for first-degree murder after finding 54-year-old Robert Allen dead amid suspicious circumstances on July 4 near 20th Street and Missouri Avenue — Hansen is also charged with using a weapon to commit a felony and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.  KETV
  • Investigators completed a five-day forensic dig on May 23 in rural Fremont County near Thurman to search for wells on a 400-acre farmland linked to Donald Studey’s alleged killings but found no new evidence—while a Los Angeles production company argues that one of his wives, Charlotte, whose death was first ruled a suicide, was in fact murdered and her daughters are urging the case be reopened.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Afterschool care at the Omaha nonprofit Completely Kids is at risk as federal grants approved on July 1 are being held by the Department of Education—raising fears that hours and services may soon be cut. The nonprofit’s CEO warned that if funding is not released, programs will be reduced—leaving many local families without the safe care they rely on.  3 News Now
  • Mayor John Ewing said Tuesday that the Omaha streetcar cost increased by $32 million to $421 million and remains on track within the approved $440 million bonds—firm contracts and tax increment financing keep costs steady and support plans for affordable housing and job growth.
