COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers gathered at Hanscom Park after the 4th of July celebrations to pick up trash, leftover firework debris, and do light gardening as part of the annual Star Spangled Cleanup; Leah Bryant, who joined with her wife Kerri in a friendly contest where the winner pays for lunch at a local bar in Benson, took part in the effort. The event was hosted by Keep Omaha Beautiful + Blue Bucket Project and coordinated by Omaha Parks and Recreation to keep the park safe from harmful chemicals.  WOWT

CRIME NEWS

  • At around 3:30 a.m., a 24-year-old woman was shot at Sonesta Suites near 72nd and Dodge and taken to Bergan Mercy with non-life-threatening injuries while Omaha police investigate the case.  KETV
  • Police investigated a stabbing at 5 p.m. on Saturday near 52nd and Lake streets in north Omaha—one person was hospitalized in critical condition—and authorities continue to investigate the case.  KETV
  • Omaha police identified Robert Allen, a 54-year-old man killed under suspicious circumstances on Fourth of July near 20th and Missouri Avenue—authorities ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP.  KETV
  • A 40-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting near Florence Boulevard and Sprague Street in North Omaha just before 1:30 p.m. on July 4, and the Omaha Police Department said the investigation is ongoing with no current threat to the public.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Omaha Pop Expo started on Saturday at Oak View Mall and offers free admission this weekend with celebrity panels and Q&A sessions with voice actors and cosplayers. The event is hosted by the Omaha Nerd Society and Nerd Empowerment Society — featuring voices from Full Metal Alchemist, One Piece, Genshin Impact and the actor behind Squidward on SpongeBob.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Several Omaha restaurants will allow dogs in their outdoor dining areas under new guidelines issued by Douglas County Health. The new rules are expected to increase dog-friendly patios across the metro.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Three Nebraska kids were chosen from nearly 600 applicants to attend Breakthrough T1D’s Children’s Congress and will travel to Washington, D.C. from July 7-9 to urge lawmakers to increase funding and research for Type 1 diabetes—hoping to make treatment easier and work toward a cure.  KETV
