COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Civic Nebraska is partnering with the Connecticut Democracy Center to bring the Kid Governor civic education program that will let fifth-graders run for a real statewide office, and nonprofits are invited to apply for grants from the Omaha Community Foundation through July 15. The AIM Institute released its 2024 Impact Report showing 6,060 participants, and in the 2025 legislative session, local nonprofits passed bills to protect homeowners and trail easements while the Douglas County Board of Commissioners awarded millions from the Visitor Improvement Fund — supporting groups like Bemis Center, Benson Theatre and Omaha Performing Arts.  Grow Omaha

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At around 2:30 a.m., Omaha police said a speeding 2016 Dodge Durango left the road and hit a retaining wall just south of 13th and M streets, killing driver Edwin Dubon while passenger Lionel Martinez and 15-year-old Haidon McGinnis-Perovich were critically injured—officials said the investigation is ongoing.  KETV

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men — Kash Davis, 21, and Latrail Washington, 23 — were sentenced to life in prison in Douglas County District Court for the 2022 murder of a 15-year-old girl after being found guilty of first-degree murder and firearm use during a felony.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Omaha’s Memorial Park concert is happening today with local performer Isabella Worden opening the event at 6:30 p.m., followed by Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs and headliner Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band leading into a fireworks show. Attendees are advised to use free parking at UNO’s campus from 4 p.m. or free shuttle rides from Dundee—since paid parking at Brownell Talbot is limited and one-way street changes are in effect.  KETV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Residents of City View apartments now have one more month to move out as the deadline is extended from June 30; only about 30 of 127 tenants have secured new homes. Many still face challenges with relocation due to past evictions and health issues—housing groups such as North Omaha Community Partnership are helping them.  WOWT
