CRIME NEWS

  • Ken'Toryon Gunn, 18, was released on a $50,000 bond for accessory to felony in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Ashtin Fletcher—who was shot near North 62nd and Camden streets in north Omaha earlier this month.  KETV
  • Douglas County authorities arrested two people after an attempted street race in front of the Sheriff’s Office at the light on 156th Street and West Maple Road, with 22-year-old Jaden Porter among those taken into custody.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • FNBO said it will add two mountain men sculptures to its popular pioneer series in downtown Omaha—pieces that honor the area's early history and serve as a tribute to local heritage.  Omaha World-Herald

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Labor announced that Nebraska’s preliminary unemployment rate for May is 3.0 percent, unchanged from last month and up 0.3 percentage points from May 2024. Nonfarm employment increased by 11,512 jobs during the month, with leisure and hospitality adding 6,234 jobs + mining and construction gaining 1,791 jobs.  KFAB

  • Henry Doorly Zoo’s Animal Behavior & Wellness Team, managed by Kaitlyn Witkor, trains animal care specialists to build trust with the zoo’s animals. The team uses operant conditioning & enrichment so the animals perform natural behaviors and stay healthy.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Douglas County commissioners have delayed $130,000 in funding for the SOG unit until July 8 — after community concerns and OPD jurisdiction issues surfaced following the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Janidi Ibrahim in North Omaha. Law enforcement leaders will meet to discuss how to improve communication and rebuild trust with the community.  3 News Now
  • The City of Ralston has moved its fireworks show from July 4th to July 3rd at 10 p.m. because new displays in the Omaha metro area prompted the change—other events, including the Ralston Day Parade on July 4th at 1 p.m., will proceed as scheduled.  KFAB
