COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nebraska Realty hosted a golfing scramble on June 20 in Omaha that raised money for the Open Door Mission by donating all proceeds toward shelter and homelessness prevention—Candace Gregory said local golfers competed to make a difference.  KETV
  • Faramir is a big, playful dog up for adoption at the Nebraska Humane Society who loves to fetch and rest his head for a scratch—he has been waiting since December and is slowly learning his leash manners. He needs a home with plenty of training, playtime, and affection.  KETV
  • Visit Omaha highlighted several weekend events—free viewing of Union Pacific’s historic rail cars at 12th and Cuming from noon to 6 p.m. and Men’s College World Series Fan Fest today at 3 p.m.—with additional activities set for June 22. The update noted that a ticketed baseball-themed family night at Henry Doorly Zoo took place yesterday while Sofia’s Play Garden at Lauritzen Gardens remains open for members through June 22.  KETV

CRIME NEWS

  • Douglas County Sheriff's investigators arrested 33-year-old Nicholas Saitta, charging him with criminal homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony after a fight near 89th and Wyoming led to the death of his 65-year-old mother, Dianne Misiunas.  KFAB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved a $1.1 billion state aid budget for the upcoming school year (it calls for a 5% tuition hike and cuts over $20 million) because low funding and higher costs forced a tough choice. University officials said the move will help keep education quality while most non-union staff will not get raises (only union staff at UNO and Kearney will see pay increases).  The Gateway

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday morning, nearly 3,000 residents lost power in the Omaha metro area after overnight thunderstorms disrupted service—2,000 in Douglas County and 900 in Sarpy County, and officials have not yet provided a timeline for power restoration.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday morning, nearly 2,500 OPPD customers and over 600 MidAmerican Energy users in Omaha lost power due to an outage—affecting homes and businesses around the city.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Caitlyn McCall from CHI Health Bergan Mercy warned Omaha’s older residents to avoid the sun and drink plenty of water as extreme heat has raised risks of dehydration and heatstroke. She urged caretakers to call 911 promptly when symptoms appear — early treatment can prevent a trip to the emergency room.  KETV

  • Coastal Carolina will play LSU in a best-of-three series for the national championship today — a contest in the College World Series finals that will decide the national champion.  WOWT
