  • The Omaha Fire Department surprised a retired firefighter on his 95th birthday—marking the occasion with a heartfelt tribute to his service.  WOWT

CRIME NEWS

  • A 34-year-old Omaha mother received a sentence of at least 70 years in prison following a fiery drunk-driving crash that killed four people — including her children.  WOWT
  • Douglas County Corrections staff—along with Omaha Fire and Rescue—attempted life-saving efforts for 54-year-old inmate Edward Henry, who was jailed on burglary, driving under suspension, and obstruction charges, after he was found unresponsive at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday in his medical unit cell following eight hours in custody, and a grand jury will investigate his death.  KFAB

  • Omaha singer Dreion, who faced tough times in foster care, will open for Earth, Wind & Fire at The Astro Amphitheater in La Vista on July 16—after his NBC appearance with Snoop Dogg on 'The Voice.'   • Nebraska officials paid nearly $900,000 in settlements over inmate deaths linked to double bunking—lawmakers have stalled a bill that would let prisoners choose to share cells as overcrowding forces the practice.  Flatwater Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU beat Arkansas 6-5 on Wednesday night when Jared Jones hit a walk-off line drive—securing the win—and the Tigers will play Coastal Carolina in a best-of-three series for a chance at their second national championship in three years.  WOWT
  • Coastal Carolina beat Louisville 11 to 3 in Omaha yesterday to move into the College World Series finals and will face LSU or Arkansas in a best-of-three series starting Saturday. The Chanticleers (56 to 11) extended their win streak to 26 games while Louisville (42 to 24) ended its run after Coastal Carolina scored five runs in the first inning.  WOWT
  • Day Five of the College World Series in Omaha delivered dramatic finishes as Louisville rallied with a walk-off run by shortstop Alex Alicea—redeeming his earlier error—to send the Cardinals to Game Eleven against Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Arkansas beat UCLA in an elimination game and advanced to face LSU on Wednesday while UCLA was eliminated.  Grow Omaha
