CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, March 22nd, 2024, the Nebraska Supreme Court denied Aldrick Scott’s appeal of his 2024 convictions for first-degree murder, use of a weapon and tampering with evidence in the 2022 killing of an Omaha woman — ruling that cell phone evidence obtained in Belize was admissible.  WOWT
  • Ashley Bordeaux pleaded no contest to attempted kidnapping from an Oct. 16 incident at a Casey’s gas station in Midtown—where a 36-year-old victim said she was tied up, burned with a lighter, and punched—and co-defendant Devan Spera pleaded guilty earlier while hearings for two others are set for next week.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Bemis Center on 12th Street hosted an opening gala on June 13 at 7 p.m. for its new exhibit 'From the Great Lakes to the Great Plains: The Visible Currents of Climate Change'—complete with complimentary libations, light hors d'oeuvres, and music by DJ Kethro—and held an exclusive preview for members from 6 to 7 p.m. Today the center will hold an artist talk from 3 to 4 p.m. with exhibiting artists including Jess Benjamin, Dana Fritz, Dylan AT Miner, the Platte Basin Timelapse founders, and Tali Weinberg as they discuss their work.  KIOS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, June 17, Omaha City Council will meet at 2 p.m. to consider proposals including a special use permit near 60th Street, TIF funding for converting a building into 187 market rate apartments, street and overpass improvements, renaming a section of Miami Street, and a human resources policy for artificial intelligence use — each item will be discussed through public hearings and votes.  WOWT
  • The City of Omaha is selling a 576 sq. ft. building at 3802 North 24th Street on the corner of 24th & Manderson Street. The building will be renovated so three non-profit organizations can share space to run urban farms, offer training and host neighborhood farmers’ markets.  Grow Omaha

HEALTH NEWS

  • An all-volunteer group raised $6 million to restore the historic hospital built by Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte—America's first Native doctor who cared for Omaha reservation patients. The hospital will be dedicated today at a private event and open to the public on June 22 to offer health care by the end of summer.  Flatwater Free Press
  • Families and officials say that requests for forced mental health treatment in Douglas County rose to over 1,000 last year while only 51 individuals were committed, leaving many vulnerable amid a broken safety net. The mental health board claims that fewer forced treatments show progress—however, experts worry the system still fails to support those in crisis.  Nebraska Public Media

  • Today, Omaha hosts the 75th at The RiverFront event celebrating the College World Series' 75th anniversary as UNO and Creighton co-host for the first time—uniting local fans with live music and food trucks. Local attendees enjoyed 80s covers by Secret Weapon, accessibility support including ASL interpretation and sensory kits—and capped the evening watching fireworks light up the metro.  The Gateway
  • At the College World Series, clear plastic tote bags or a gallon freezer bag are allowed—clutches and purses must be 4.5 inches tall by 6.5 inches long after a security check to enter the stadium.  KETV
