CULTURE NEWS

  • The Omaha Arts Fair debuts today at Stinson Park to continue the legacy of the 50-year Omaha Arts Festival that ended last year—local artist Adam Weiss started the fair to link local creators with community members. The event will run through Sunday and offer art demonstrations, live music and a chance for families to enjoy art outdoors.  Nebraska Public Media
  • The Omaha Freedom Festival will take place on June 14 at the Malcolm X Outside Event Plaza and will offer free food + live music to celebrate Juneteenth. Operations Manager Calvin Williams said the festival will run from noon to five with the Love + Laughter concert beginning at 7:00 p.m.  KETV
  • Opera Omaha's outdoor opera Fantastic Mr. Fox opened on June 5 at Lauritzen Gardens—featuring lead Michael J. Hawk as the title character—and will run through June 8.  KIOS
  • June is National Dairy Month, and kids celebrated by drinking milk and eating ice cream bars provided by hardworking Nebraska farmers—Nebraska Department of Agriculture director Sherry Vinton said they take care of their animals to deliver high quality products. The dairy industry adds 5.8 billion dollars to the state’s economy each year.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Omaha Public Library kicked off its Summer Reading Program on June 1 with the theme —Color Our World—; the event runs through July 31 and is open to all ages who can track their reading minutes for a chance to win prizes.  KETV
  • More than 4,500 UNO students were honored on the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists during the Spring term for earning high grades. The Chancellor’s List—requiring a 4.0 GPA from 1,377 students—and the Dean’s List—recognizing a 3.5 or higher GPA from 3,138 students—highlighted their academic success.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • At the Douglas County Youth Center, a program led by Roscoe Wallace teaches empathy and accountability to high-risk incarcerated youth through peer support circles — showing them how their actions affect themselves and taxpayers. DCYC Superintendent Rondy Woodard said the six-week initiative is needed as Wallace visits the teens three times a week and the team even supports them in court.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Omaha Police will shut down roads near Charles Schwab Field during College World Series games to install new traffic barriers—designed to tip over when struck by a vehicle and stop its momentum. The barriers will be placed at the intersections of Mike Fahey Street with 10th and 14th and on 13th Street with Cass and Cuming.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • City View Apartments in Omaha is shutting down after months of financial and safety issues, and tenants must move out by June 30 with 127 still scheduled to leave as of June 2. Local partners—Metro Housing Collaborative, Reimagine, and the Omaha Housing Authority—are working to relocate the residents.  KETV
