COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ WOWT is hosting the Stuff the Truck food drive on Thursday, June 4 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at four Methodist locations in Omaha, Fremont and Council Bluffs to collect nonperishable food, household essentials, and cash donations to help fight hunger. WOWT
- ➤ Omaha offers a busy weekend of community events from a Disney costume exhibit at Durham Museum (running through Oct. 25) to live spray paint at Bancroft Street Market and a food festival at Heartland of America Park; also, free improv shows, parades and farmers markets occur through Sunday. WOWT
- ➤ Innocence Freed, a local nonprofit, provides clothing, supplies and a safe shopping space free of charge for sex trafficking survivors. The organization, founded by Julie Shrader, partners with Clothes Mentor Omaha and seeks housing to support both adult and minor survivors. KETV
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Kwik Trip, a Wisconsin-based convenience store chain, is planning to expand into Nebraska without yet selecting a location or timeline, and will use its Kwik Star brand as it has in neighboring markets. WOWT
- ➤ The Surface Transportation Board paused the review of UP and NS’s amended merger application — asking for extra details including an environmental impact statement and input on nine items. The supplemental information is due by July 27 to allow the review to continue under public oversight. WOWT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A Creighton Prep junior in Omaha spent five years creating The Portal, an 85-minute stop-motion Lego film that premiered yesterday at Great Events Theater. He transformed his North Omaha bedroom into a studio (the project began as a fifth-grade comic) and now plans his next film. KETV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Dele Davies, interim chancellor (since 2024) visited NU campuses on May 28 to meet with students and staff as part of his bid for the open chancellor position. He, who joined the university in 2012, asked for community feedback to strengthen UNMC’s trusted ties. KETV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Street will be closed from Highway 281 to Lawrence Lane and Overland Drive from June 1 to Aug. 31 — part of the Claude Road/Diers Avenue Improvement Project — Public Works said. Omaha World-Herald
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska volleyball revealed its 2026 schedule with 28 regular-season games, including 17 against Big Ten teams and 11 nonconference matches. They will begin with exhibitions on Aug. 27 in Arlington, Texas, and conclude with the Big Ten Tournament at Fishers Event Center from Nov. 20 to Nov. 25. KETV
- ➤ Special Olympics Nebraska hosted its annual opening ceremonies yesterday at DJ Sokol Arena on the Creighton University campus — featuring a parade of athletes, the Summer Games cauldron lighting, award presentations, speakers and a performance by Red Panda. KETV
- ➤ Athletes, teams, coaches and media from across the area were honored on Thursday evening at the eighth annual Omaha Sports Commission Awards Show, which celebrated local sports achievements and inducted five new members into the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame. KETV
