COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Malcolm X Memorial Foundation announced phase 2 of its cultural campus at 3448 Evans Street with construction in 2027 & opening in 2030, Joslyn Castle’s Carriage House Café opened May 21, and Sunflower Grant Writers will launch Scholar School along with a city ordinance vote on June 2.  Grow Omaha
  • Muddy Paws hosted its second Tattoos for Tails event Saturday at Black Squirrel Tattoo, where eight artists offered ink sessions and raffle prizes as three rescue dogs were available for adoption. Organizers said they hope a third event will happen next year.  KETV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dundee Barber, the historic barbershop with two chairs at 50th & Dodge Street, has doubled in size by expanding into a space once used by Merle Norman. The shop added staff and updated its space to offer an upscale, classic and traditional look for the neighborhood.  Grow Omaha

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index fell to 45.7 in May from 47.9 in April, marking the fourth consecutive month below growth neutral and the 15th drop since January 2025. The index is based on surveys of rural bank CEOs from a 10 state region tied to agriculture + energy.  Grow Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Omaha is enjoying spectacular weather today with warming skies and light winds, though a few spotty showers are forecast tonight; local graduates received congratulations as they celebrated a top ten day with community and family support.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Omaha streetcar construction will bring new downtown and midtown lane closures the week of May 25 while some previously closed lanes reopen, affecting travel flow as work continues on the project.  Omaha World-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Creighton baseball defeated Xavier 7 to 4 to advance to the Big East Championship title match and will now face St. John's today at 8 a.m. The Jays must win two games against the Red Storm to secure the title.  KETV
  • High school baseball state championships were played Saturday at Werner Park in Papillion. Millard North secured its first title since 2005 with a 6-5 win, while Skutt Catholic claimed its first championship since 2017 and Lincoln Lutheran earned its first-ever title with a 3-2 win.  WOWT
  • Nebraska baseball defeated Michigan 6-4 in a late night game — they advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semis and will face the winner of the Oregon-Washington game in Game 16.  KETV
  • On Sat, May 23, Nebraska softball defeated Oklahoma State 9-1 in five innings in the Lincoln Super Regional, advancing to its first Women’s College Series since 2013. Hannah Coor led with a double and solo home run that tied the game and extended Nebraska’s lead.  KETV
