  • This Memorial Day weekend, Omaha hosts a variety of free events across the metro as Memorial Park features live entertainment, a 400-drone show, and the world's largest American flag ceremony on Friday, while local venues offer pancake breakfasts and markets from Friday through Monday.  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Drybar will open a blowout salon this fall at Village Pointe Shopping Center — immediately north of Early Bird restaurant. It will be Drybar’s second Omaha spot after its location at Regency Shopping Center near Borsheims.  Grow Omaha
  • The Capital Grille will build its first Nebraska restaurant on a 1.9-acre lot at 14500 Branch Street in west Omaha, planning a 9,144 sqft building near Carson Group and Union Bank. The building permit was filed yesterday for the prime steakhouse chain founded in 1990.  Grow Omaha

  • AAA data shows gas prices are averaging $4.55 per gallon (up 43% from last Memorial Day) as millions of travelers prepare for a busy Memorial Day weekend; drivers in Omaha and across the nation may see higher pump costs.  KETV

  • Omaha trash collection is delayed one day for Memorial Day; regular service returns next Monday.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska officials at the National Quarantine Unit at UNMC-Nebraska Medicine in Omaha held a briefing Friday on cruise ship passengers quarantined after a hantavirus outbreak and said they are awaiting CDC guidance to release them.  WOWT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Nebraska Game and Parks invites residents to join its Outdoor Nebraska 250-Mile Challenge by logging activities such as walking, running, kayaking, or horseback riding to reach 250 miles before year’s end. Participants fill out a form on the agency’s website to qualify for prizes.  3 News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska softball resumed play Saturday afternoon after a weather delay and defeated Oklahoma State 8-1 with key hits (including a three-run homer by Jesse Farrell) that built an early lead before the Cowgirls scored once. The Huskers will meet again at Bowlin Stadium at 4 p.m. in a best-of-three series.  KETV
  • A Nebraska robotics team from Brownell Talbot finished 23-0 to win the VEX world championship in a competition featuring 900 teams from 42 countries. Their undefeated run shows the team's skill and determination on the global stage.  Omaha World-Herald
