  • The Salvation Army of Omaha will launch Family Meals of Hope this summer, serving free, healthy meals at four parks on weeknights from June 2 through August 1 while the Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative plans a Head Start 60th anniversary party on May 28 at 3200 North 30th Street, Suite 200. The Omaha Storm Chasers will honor the Child Saving Institute as the Charitable Organization of the Game on May 27 for National Foster Care Month — and AAA the Urban Nature Alliance planted 15 trees Tuesday in the Ramblewood neighborhood of Elkhorn with plans to plant 150 more in the fall.  Grow Omaha

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews battled a blaze at a two-story home near 27th and Fort on Wednesday afternoon—no one was home, no injuries were reported, and officials are investigating the cause.  KETV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old (Janidi Ibrahim) was shot by a deputy early Thursday at 48th and Pratt in north Omaha while in his car and died at the hospital after first aid was given, with police searching for suspects and the deputy placed on administrative leave (per protocol).  KFAB
  • A shooting erupted early Thursday morning near 48th and Pratt in North Omaha when a deputy made contact with a car carrying several men, leaving one man critically injured and suspects at large — the deputy has been placed on administrative leave as the Nebraska State Patrol investigates.  3 News Now
  • A 19-year-old man, Janidi Ibrahim, was shot and killed by a Douglas County deputy during a SWAT-led firearms investigation early Thursday morning near 48th and Pratt streets — he was pronounced dead at University of Nebraska Medical Center and a grand jury will decide if charges will be filed while additional suspects remain at large.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Legislature rejected four of Gov. Pillen’s line-item vetoes on Thursday after the bills were delivered past the midnight deadline, with Speaker John Arch saying the vetoes were not accepted under the Constitution. Gov. Pillen’s office said the vetoes were properly submitted and will consult with legal counsel on next steps — leaving the issue unresolved.  Nebraska Examiner
