COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bellevue Food Pantry broke ground last Friday at the former Bellevue Public Library (1003 Lincoln Road) for a new facility 20 times larger than its previous 1,000 sqft space. Renovations will add a 3,000 sqft pantry, coolers, community meeting areas and a garden, with an expected opening this December.  Grow Omaha
  • Drivers in South Omaha faced route changes as 24th Street closed for the Cinco de Mayo Festival starting Thursday at 8 p.m.; the five-day closures also affected M and N Streets (between 24th and 23rd Streets), prompting commuters to use JFK or 13th Street as alternate routes.  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • L.L. Bean announced plans to open a new store in West Omaha for outdoor apparel and gear. The brand expects the location to open soon (details pending).  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Smithsonian exhibit on Green Book safe havens made its final stop at the Durham Museum — highlighting 30 local sites that once welcomed Black travelers during segregation. Local students and historians presented research to help bring these invisible histories to light.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Blanca Brownmiller, a soldier and mother, graduated from UNO today after balancing full-time military service, school, and family life for over a decade. She will begin Officer Candidate School with the Nebraska Army National Guard soon (her degree meets the 90-credit requirement for commissioning).  University of Nebraska Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Omaha's Oma-Gro compost program is moving from its south Bellevue site to near 60th and Harrison streets — the facility will close May 30 as production halts for 18 months, though bagged compost is available until May 22 and bulk until May 29, with increased sales expected after reopening.  WOWT
  • Today, Waste Management is opening a new plant that converts landfill gas to renewable natural gas and supports efforts to modernize local waste recovery.  Omaha World-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Omaha Mavericks beat South Dakota State 10-7 in Summit League baseball on Thursday at Tal Anderson Field. Senior Sam Beck’s first home run, a three-run shot by Chase Diggins (playing in a leg brace), and Jackson Trout’s two-run homer helped secure the win.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Nebraska softball enters the NCAA tournament as the top-ranked team and will host its regional opener against the Coyotes in Lincoln today while riding a 21-game winning streak. The dominant pitching trio of Jordy Frahm, Alexis Jensen and Hannah Camenzind has earned 45 of the Huskers’ 46 wins.  KETV
