ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Flames engulfed a trailer home near 107th Plaza and Iowa Plaza in north Omaha just before 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, injuring three people including two in critical condition and one with smoke inhalation—Irvington and Bennington fire crews took 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze as investigators probed the cause. - ➤ A man arrested in connection with a shooting in an Omaha church basement made his first court appearance Wednesday and faced charges of two counts of first-degree assault as well as two counts of using a firearm to commit a felony—his bond was set at $1 million. WOWT
- ➤ Omaha Police arrested 25-year-old Kpor Kue on first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy and firearm charges in connection with last May's killing of Kyaw Thu near 45th and Charles streets—following earlier court appearances for three other suspects. WOWT

- ➤ Although Nebraska voters approved medical marijuana, patients still cannot get it because no dispensaries are open and the Cannabis Commission has not made rules—expected to begin by Oct. 1— and the issue remains unclear. State Sen. Ben Hansen’s bill LB677 would change the law—banning smoking and limiting the list of illnesses—but it faces hard debates and court challenges as lawmakers work to set clear rules. - ➤ John Ewing was elected as Omaha's first Black mayor Tuesday—fulfilling a prediction made 13 years ago by Rev. Cedric Perkins, who said he got a divine message while seeing Ewing on the City-County Building escalator. Ewing shared the story in his victory speech and promised to lead the city with care. - ➤ State Sen. Tom Brandt unveiled a 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Wednesday that would add $100 million a year for property tax relief by imposing new sales taxes on 20 optional items and raising taxes on cigarettes and vapes—lawmakers will debate the measure Monday. Nebraska Examiner
