  • The Greater Omaha Heart Walk will take place this weekend to raise funds and awareness for the American Heart Association. First Alert 6's Maria Cade interviewed local advocates Chad and Jisella Brough to share key event details.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • La Casa has kept its signature pizza recipe and family legacy alive since the 1950s at its original Leavenworth site and two other Omaha locations. The restaurant is known for its unique thin-crust pies topped with aged Romano cheese and Nebraska beef, sparking friendly debate among locals.  Flatwater Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska system will start one Canvas system across all campuses in the fall 2026 semester to make logging in easier for students and teachers + some teachers began testing the new system on March 23 to get ready for fall classes.  The Gateway
  • UNO named Catherine Link, deputy Title IX coordinator at the university, Employee of the Month for May after her work advanced Title IX training and strengthened civil rights compliance campuswide. HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC reported that 18 cruise ship passengers who arrived at Eppley Airfield on Monday have been evaluated at Nebraska Medicine, and although one passenger awaits retest for hantavirus, no quarantine orders have been issued as they begin a 42-day self-monitoring period.  WOWT
  • Officials have quarantined 18 American passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship following a hantavirus outbreak; experts say the virus—spread mainly by rodent droppings and rarely transmitted between people—is less contagious than COVID-19, with treatment underway at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and at UNMC.  KETV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • An apartment project is proposed by the Omaha Planning Board for a 9.51-acre site at the southwest corner of 192nd & Q Street. The plan includes six large multi-family buildings & significant landscaping with nearly 250 trees, though more details remain unknown.  Grow Omaha

SPORTS NEWS

  • Omaha Track and Field will head north for the Summit League Outdoor Championships starting today through May 16, where 16 athletes will compete in 13 events including 11 track events & two field events. The meet kicks off at 5 p.m. CT with the long jump.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Creighton volleyball released its 2026 schedule with an exhibition game on Aug. 16 at home against South Dakota, then starts its season in Sioux Falls — featuring a Big Ten showcase and an I-80 rivalry at Nebraska on Sept. 16 — before hosting a Big East Tournament on Nov. 21-22.  KETV
